Personal Finance Management Tips

The increase in consumerism today has made the common man or the average earner to spend more than what he used to. This resulted in more people getting in to debts and credit card scams. Many people today are suffering from huge loans that they have taken from the banks and are finding it difficult to pay them back.

All this confusion leads them to the conclusion that finance management is almost impossible. This is not right. It is definitely true that the concept of personal finance management and personal budgets is completely confusing, but they are not impossible for sure.

All this confusion leads them to the conclusion that finance management is almost impossible. This is not right. It is definitely true that the concept of personal finance management and personal budgets is completely confusing, but they are not impossible for sure.

Having sound personal budgeting strategies means you can settle your debts and mortgage loans early, pay regular bills comfortably and still have some money left to help you purchase things for your house or even plan for a small vacation.

This will lower your bill a little.

Look at the lights you are using in the house, if you have forty or sixty watt bulbs you are using less energy than seventy five and one hundred watt bulbs in all the lamps in your home. Cut costs by starting with the electric bill. Manage your budget; manage your money by adding more to your monthly household budget.

Another cardinal mistake people commit when using credit cards is that they fail to pay them off when they are supposed to either because they genuinely forget, or because they simply do not have the cash to do so at that current period in time. The truth of the matter is that if you do not pay you will end up paying more money in the long term and this is because of the interest payments that you will be hit with.

We can blame so many factors for this ? the government, the corporates and most of all the banks who gave easy loans to people who could never afford them. But the truth is that it?s the job of banks to encourage us to take loans. That?s how their business. It?s only up to us to make complete sense of the situation.

You will have to make some data entry first of all to provide all the financial details. Then you can device your long term and short term financial requirements separately. After this, you provide the amount of savings and investments that you have made and are planning to make. Once all these information is gathered, the tool produces a very effective budget for us.

Now you have all your expenses listed out. From the last section, cut down all the expenses that you think is no necessary. You will surely find enough unwanted expenses here. Now reduce the expense that you think is less important. Now you have a renewed last section.

Dani Klein Modisett: 14 Reasons Why Being A Stay At Home Person Sucks

1. Because I know having two beautiful, healthy children to care for is the biggest privilege I've ever been given and for that fact alone I should never, no way, no how, allow myself to feel the intense rage that wells up in me at least once a day many days between the hours of 3:30 and bedtime.

2. Because I also know that I should be on my knees thanking God every day for being able to kiss my 4 year old's squishy cheeks instead of cursing under my breath wondering what led a college educated woman into a life where I spend a not insignificant amount of time on my knees chasing run away macaroni elbows and cheese stick wrappers when I'm not earnestly trying to get formerly white socks white again.

3. Because I am now, in fact, earnest about stain removal.

4. Because I never get to come home and have my kids jump in to my arms and yell, "I missed you Mommy!" My kids don't miss me. I'm right in front of them.

5. Because I would have to work 80 hours a week to earn enough money to cover the cost of having someone really attentive and smart and kind care for my children. And knowing that if I had that job, and found this great woman, I would hate her.

6. Because people who work outside the house have a reason to look nice and keep themselves well groomed. They can wear silk shirts and feel all sexy about it. If I wear a silk shirt I have to spend the day in constant motion knowing that if I slow down one of my children will use me as a napkin.

7. Because as cosmic payback for having lived exclusively on frozen yogurt and popcorn for years, God has delivered to me two boys who will only eat white food. No matter how much butter and cheese I bathe them in, a vegetable will not be swallowed. This would be fine since they're healthy, except that raising children hasn't made me a less competitive person so I still read everything written about the importance of balanced nutrition and curse myself every day that I am not doing it right and other mothers are and how did I fall so far behind the curve on this? Usually while nursing my 4th espresso.

8. Because in order to keep up the relentless joyful energy I feel my children need to see reflected in my face I have become a caffeine addict.

9. Because although I take no credit for how verbal my kids are from my having talked to them incessantly since the day they were born, I can easily get thrust into an "it's all my fault" shame spiral for any of the following infractions: my boys leaving the house wearing shirts with paint on them, their hair looking like it's been brushed with a Cuisinart, any request they make that doesn't include "please" and "thank-you," and as already stated, their rejection of all non-white food, particularly when out with other families where kids are slamming down sushi and wheat grass shots.

10. Because dirty dishes seem to spawn more dirty dishes when left alone in the sink.

11. Because as I drive the boys from school to swimming and to soccer in my role as LA Cabbie, thinking about the talk I have to have with my husband about how we, (meaning me), are going to fill the terrifying voids left by breaks in school, I fantasize about how if I worked outside the home I would have such unqualified financial independence that we wouldn't need to engage in any dreaded talks about where and how to spend money.

12. Because when I was single and commuted between two one room apartments on either coast for 10 years, an urban stone gathering no moss if you will, I know I felt desperately lonely and unmoored and prayed for the life I have today, but after this recent three week vacation I started thinking it wasn't all that bad. Sure I spent a lot of time staring at the wall, but at least I could get on a telephone without triggering an endless barrage of questions from two boys who only minutes before offered up only one word answers on the drive home from school.

13. Because my boys and I recently watched the movie "E.T." and I was reminded of these few lines of dialogue (I'm paraphrasing), Kid 1: "How do you win in life?" Kid 2: "Money helps." And it stung a little.

14. Because I still think that if I was exceptionally talented and smart I could have it all. I could be the kind of mother I need to be, who's there to run math facts, catch my son's throw-up (just last night, in fact) and be a super-attentive wife who loves and supports my husband and eagerly communicates about all the little details of daily life, free of worry, and who also has a powerful job where I get paid really well to make as much of a difference outside the home as I do inside the home. What truly sucks is thinking that if I just managed my time more efficiently, worked harder, prayed harder, and ate less of the kids' grilled cheese crusts, all of this would be possible.

GIGLIO, Italy (AP) ? Maritime authorities, passengers and mounting evidence pointed Sunday toward the captain of a cruise liner that ran aground and capsized off the Tuscan coast, amid accusations that he abandoned ship before everyone was safely evacuated and was showing off when he steered the vessel far too close to shore.

Divers searching the murky depths of the partially submerged Costa Concordia found the bodies of two elderly men still in their life jackets, bringing the confirmed death toll to five. At least 15 people were still missing, including two Americans.

The recovered bodies were discovered at an emergency gathering point near the restaurant where many of the 4,200 on board were dining when the luxury liner struck rocks or a reef off the tiny island of Giglio. The Italian news agency ANSA reported the dead were an Italian and a Spaniard.

Still, there were glimmers of hope: The rescue of three survivors ? a young South Korean couple on their honeymoon and a crew member brought to shore in a dramatic airlift some 36 hours after the grounding late Friday.

Meanwhile, attention focused on the captain, who was spotted by Coast Guard officials and passengers fleeing the scene even as the chaotic and terrifying evacuation was under way.

The ship's Italian owner, a subsidiary of Carnival Cruise lines, issued a statement late Sunday saying there appeared to be "significant human error" on the part of the captain, Francesco Schettino, "which resulted in these grave consequences."

Authorities were holding Schettino for suspected manslaughter and a prosecutor confirmed Sunday they were also investigating allegations the captain abandoned the stricken liner before all the passengers had escaped. According to the Italian navigation code, a captain who abandons a ship in danger can face up to 12 years in prison.

A French couple who boarded the Concordia in Marseille, Ophelie Gondelle and David Du Pays, told the Associated Press they saw the captain in a lifeboat, covered by a blanket, well before all the passengers were off the ship.

"The commander left before and was on the dock before everyone was off," said Gondelle, 28, a French military officer.

"Normally the commander should only leave at the end," said Du Pays, a police officer who said he helped an injured passenger to a rescue boat. "I did what I could."

Coast Guard officers later spotted Schettino on land as the evacuation unfolded. The officers urged him to return to his ship and honor his duty to stay aboard until everyone was safely off the vessel, but he ignored them, Coast Guard Cmdr. Francesco Paolillo said.

Schettino insisted he didn't leave the liner early, telling Mediaset television that he had done everything he could to save lives. "We were the last ones to leave the ship," he said.

Questions also swirled about why the ship had navigated so close to the dangerous reefs and rocks that jut off Giglio's eastern coast, amid suspicions the captain may have ventured too close while carrying out a maneuver to entertain tourists on the island.

The ship's owner, Costa Crociere SpA, issued a statement late Sunday saying it was working with investigators to determine "precisely what went wrong aboard the Costa Concordia."

"While the investigation is ongoing, preliminary indications are that there may have been significant human error on the part of the ship's master, Captain Francesco Schettino, which resulted in these grave consequences," the statement said. "The route of the vessel appears to have been too close to the shore, and the captain's judgment in handling the emergency appears to have not followed standard Costa procedures."

Residents of Giglio said they had never seen the Costa come so close to the dangerous "Le Scole" reef area.

"This was too close, too close," said Italo Arienti, a 54-year-old sailor who has worked on the Maregiglio ferry between Giglio and the mainland for more than a decade. Pointing to a nautical map, he drew his finger along the path the ship usually takes and the jarring one close to shore that it followed Friday.

The ship was a mere 150 yards (meters) from shore at the time of the grounding, ANSA quoted Grosseto prosecutor Francesco Verusio as saying.

Schettino insisted he was twice as far out and said the ship ran aground because the rocks weren't marked on his nautical charts.

However, he did concede he was maneuvering the ship in "touristic navigation" ? implying a route that was a deviation from the norm and designed to entertain the tourists.

"We were navigating approximately 300 meters (yards) from the rocks," he told Mediaset television. "There shouldn't have been such a rock. On the nautical chart it indicated that there was water deep below."

Costa captains have occasionally steered the ship near port and sounded the siren in a special salute, Arienti said. Such a nautical "fly-by" was staged last August, prompting the town's mayor to send a note of thanks to the commander for the treat it provided tourists who flock to the island, local news portal GiglioNews.it reported.

But Arienti and other residents said even on those occasions, the cruise ship always stayed far offshore, well beyond the reach of the "Le Scole" reefs.

"Every so often they would do a greeting, but not so close ? far away, safely," said resident Giacomo Dannipale.

Douglas Ward, a cruise expert and author of the 2012 Berlitz guide to cruises, said the waters around Giglio are too shallow for such maneuvers.

Coast Guard Cmdr. Filippo Marini said divers had recovered the so-called "black box," with the recording of the navigational details, from a compartment now under water, though no details were released.

Jorgen Loren, chairman of the Swedish Maritime Officer's Association, said the captain clearly deviated from the ship's intended route.

"It is remarkable because weather conditions were good and these cruise ships have the best and most modern technical equipment. All conditions were ideal," he said.

"These are well-known waters, ferries pass here every day going back and forward to the mainland," he said.

Meanwhile, rescue work continued into the night on the unsubmerged half of the Concordia, said firefighters spokesman Luca Cari. Sniffer dogs were being brought in, although it was unclear if they could adapt to working in an environment where the horizontal became the vertical, due to the 90-degree list of the ship.

Marini, the coast guard captain, held out hope there could still be survivors, perhaps holed up in the section still above water, or that some of the unaccounted passengers simply didn't report their safe arrival on land.

Earlier Sunday, a helicopter airlifted a cabin crew member from the capsized hulk just hours after South Korean honeymooners were rescued from their cabin when firefighters heard their screams.

A relative of the rescued crewman told reporters he had survived two nights in darkness and with his feet in water.

Besides the two dead discovered Sunday, the bodies of three other victims ? two French passengers and a Peruvian crewman ? were pulled out of the sea in the hours after the accident.

Survivors described a terrifying escape that was straight out of a scene from "Titanic." Many complained the crew didn't give them good directions on how to evacuate and once the emergency became clear, delayed lowering the lifeboats until the ship was listing too heavily for all to be released.

"We were left to ourselves," pregnant French passenger Isabelle Mougin, who injured her ankle in the scramble, told the ANSA news agency.

Another French passenger, Jeanne Marie de Champs, said that faced with the chaotic scene at the lifeboats, she decided to take her chances swimming to shore.

"I was afraid I wouldn't make the shore, but then I saw we were close enough, I felt calmer," she told Sky News 24.

Coast Guard diver Majko Aidone, interviewed by Sky TG24 TV after his dive, explained that the first task after gaining access to a submerged space, is to tie down large floating objects, like mattresses, which could turn into dangerous obstacles.

Then, in hopes of alerting any survivors to their presence, "we make noise," he said.

Crews in dinghies climbed on board the exposed hull of the ship and touched it, near the site of the 160-foot-long (50-meter-long) gash where water flooded in and caused the ship to topple on its side.

Earlier Sunday, at a Mass held in Giglio's main church, which opened its doors to the evacuees Friday night, altar boys and girls brought up a life vest, a rope, a rescue helmet, a plastic tarp and some bread.

Don Lorenzo, the parish priest, told the faithful that he wanted to make this admittedly "different" offering to God as a memory of the tragedy.

"Our community, our island will never be the same," he said.

'Extinct' tortoises may still be roaming a Galapagos island

A giant tortoise species studied by Charles Darwin and believed to be extinct for more than 150 years may be alive and well, an ambitious genetic survey has revealed.

Blood sampling of more than 1,600 tortoises on the largest Galapagos island, Isabela, has revealed that about 84 of them had at least one purebred parent from a supposedly extinct species that once lived at the other end of the archipelago.

Researchers hope they can find these tortoises in the flesh on Isabela Island, breed them in captivity and then release them back onto Floreana Island, their native home.

The study, published in Tuesday's edition of the journal Current Biology, may be the first rediscovery of an "extinct" species ever made through looking for genetic markers in hybrid offspring.

The giant tortoise, among the largest living reptiles on Earth, is an icon of the Galapagos Islands, which take their very name from the Spanish word for tortoise, gal?pago. The creatures are thought to have arrived on the volcanic islands about 2 million to 3 million years ago from the South American mainland.

Each tortoise species ? some larger, with domed shells, and others smaller, with saddleback shells ? was unique to a particular island or volcano, living and evolving in isolation from the others. The diversity of tortoise species Darwin saw during his 1835 visit to the Galapagos Islands partly inspired his theory of evolution.

"I never dreamed that islands, about 50 or 60 miles apart, and most of them in sight of each other, formed of precisely the same rocks, placed under a quite similar climate, rising to a nearly equal height, would have been differently tenanted," Darwin wrote in "The Voyage of the Beagle," first published in 1839.

But within just a few years of Darwin's voyage, one of the tortoises ? the saddleback Chelonoidis elephantopus, living on the southern Floreana Island ? had already vanished.

Darwin himself never saw one alive. Whaling ships and pirates had long hunted the animals for food and oil; tortoises were handy supplies to keep on board, as they could be stowed in the hull for months ? flipped on their backs so they couldn't escape ? without receiving food or water.

And humans introduced new threats on the islands. Rats from the ships preyed upon tortoise eggs; goats trampled them and devoured the islands' vegetation. All tortoise species around the Galapagos Islands suffered from the onslaught; but perhaps none more than Chelonoidis elephantopus. By 1850, it was gone.

In recent years, however, scientists sampling a different species, Chelonoidis becki, came across a surprising discovery. Within this population of tortoises native to Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island, there were a handful bearing traces of Floreana tortoise DNA in their genomes. At some time in the past, it appeared, the Floreana tortoise had made it to ? and mated on ? Isabela.

Spurred on by this suggestion that the Floreana tortoise might still exist on Isabela, the researchers, led by population geneticist Ryan Garrick, who is now at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, decided to look more closely.

Garrick and colleagues took blood samples from 1,669 tortoises living on Wolf Volcano ? about one-fifth of the tortoise population there ? and ran them against a database of tortoise DNA.

The analysis showed that 84 of the tortoises had more than just traces of C. elephantopus within them: One of their parents was purebred C. elephantopus, a creature supposedly extinct for more than a century and a half.

Based on genetic analysis, the scientists estimate that about 38 C. elephantopus tortoises had parented these offspring on Wolf Volcano. And though many of those parents may not be alive today, some probably are. Thirty of the 84 hybrids Garrick and his co-workers found were less than 15 years old, and the creatures are thought to live for more than 100 years. Purebred parents are very likely still roaming the volcano.

It's just a matter of finding them.

George Amato, director of the genomics program at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, called the results "very exciting."

"To be honest with you, I can't think of another example of this kind of work on endangered species that's done such a detailed job of reconstructing this very interesting history," Amato said.

The researchers have some thoughts on how the tortoises managed to get from one of the southernmost islands to the archipelago's northwestern edge. Fast-moving whalers, or pirates looking to reduce their load while fighting or fleeing, may have hurriedly dumped the animals, taken along for food, at sea.

"These guys don't swim, but they float like a wine cork in a bathtub," Garrick said. "The prevailing current goes northwest in the ocean, making [Isabela] island the last place they would catch land before getting swept into the north Pacific."

The search is now on for live, purebred C. elephantopus tortoises on Isabela. If they're found, the researchers hope to start a breeding program in captivity to raise more of them and then bring them back to their native Floreana.

Tortoises are a very important part of an island's ecosystem, Garrick said. They keep the prickly pear cactus in check by grazing on it and, by relieving themselves around other parts of the island, also act as the plant's primary seed-dispersal method.

Even if the purebred tortoises don't turn up, intensively breeding the most promising hybrids could be useful as well, Garrick added.

"This really comes down to not giving up on biodiversity conservation, even when things look grim," he said.

McCain raps high court's campaign finance ruling | Washington ...

AP Photo/CBS News, Chris Usher

This image released by CBS News Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, shows Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on "Face the Nation" in Washington. McCain discussed his endorsement of Mitt Romney and the 2012 presidential campaign.

Sen. John McCain says the Supreme Court ruling that led to formation of super PACs was "one of the worst decisions I have ever seen."

McCain, whose name has been synonymous with the push for campaign finance reform, also says, quoting, "I predict to you that there will be huge scandals associated with this huge flood of money."

McCain was referring to Citizens United, the court's 2010 ruling against limits on spending by independent organizations. The justices based their decision on freedom of speech principles.

A super PAC supporting former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney ran negative ads against former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in Iowa. Gingrich says the spots substantially harmed his campaign. And Gingrich now is benefiting from similar spending by a group running anti-Romney ads in South Carolina.

Rapper Snoop Dogg Arrested on Marijuana Charge in Sierra Blanco, Texas (ContributorNetwork)

The rapper Snoop Dogg has joined the list of celebrities who have been caught holding marijuana at a checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas, near El Paso. Dogg was arrested and then released at the Border Patrol checkpoint, according to the El Paso Times.

The area around the checkpoint is famous for having caught a number of celebrities on drug charges, including Willie Nelson and rappers Paul Wall and Baby Bash. Even Johnny Cash ran afoul of the law, having been caught on a drug charge in 1965.

What led to Snoop Dogg's arrest?

Snoop Dogg's tour bus was stopped at the Border Patrol checkpoint. A drug sniffing dog was used to search the bus. A red prescription bottle was found in a trash can in the back of the bus with marijuana cigarettes inside. In all 10 pounds of marijuana was found inside the bus.

What happened next?

Dogg was arrested by Border Patrol agents and charged with a Class C misdemeanor for possession of drug paraphernalia. He has been ordered to appear in court on or before Jan. 20. Dogg said he was in San Antonio to watch his son's football game. He claims to have a California medical marijuana license due to headaches and blurred vision.

Is this Snoop Dogg's first run in with the law?

On marijuana charges alone, Dogg has faced the law numerous times. In 1998, 2001, twice in 2006, at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and after performing on the "Tonight Show," and again in 2007 he was arrested on marijuana charges. This list does not include numerous non drug offenses Dogg has been charged with.

Who have been some of the other celebrities caught in Sierra Blanca?

The most celebrated case was that of Willie Nelson, who was caught at the same checkpoint and arrested for possession of 6 ounces of marijuana. A story was published in the media that Nelson was asked by the judge to sing in his courtroom as part of his punishment. Later it was claimed the story was a joke. Nelson's case is still pending after a plea agreement was rejected.

Cash was arrested in the same general area in 1965 and was held in the El Paso County Jail on drug charges. According to the El Paso Times, Cash had 668 Dexadrine and 475 Equanil tablets he had purchased on the street in Juarez, Mexico. The judge fined him a $1,000 and gave him a suspended sentence.

Sony reveals SS-AR2 loudspeaker, wants an invite to your next house party

Sony has been quite busy chatting up new products for 2012 here at CES. One of the new pieces of tech is the SS-AR2 loudspeaker that looks to keep the up the reputation of its elder sibling in the R-Series line, the SS-AR1. Maple from Hokkaido, an island in northern Japan encloses all the important components and contributes to the overall sound quality. The SS-AR2 is a 4-unit, 3-way vented standing tower that sports a frequency response ranging from 42kHz to 60kHz. Distortion is combated by positioning the bass reflex port in just the right to spot to allow a duo of woofers to drive without a hitch. Birch partitions on the interior construct a well-insulated cavity keeping the midrange and tweeters just the right distance apart from the bass section -- and all those tones neat and tidy. Supreme Court to hear case of dream home quashed by EPA

The Supreme Court on Monday will hear arguments in a case that shows the EPA is out of control, property-rights advocates say. Environmentalists say the couple involved is merely trying to scapegoat the EPA. ?

The US Supreme Court on Monday is set to hear a case involving the Environmental Protection Agency that some?property-rights advocates and business groups say is an example of how onerous federal regulations are spreading throughout the country.

The case examines whether an Idaho couple may seek the help of a federal judge to decide a dispute with the EPA over whether the lot they purchased for a planned dream home is a federally-regulated wetland.

Environmental groups say the couple could have avoided the agency action by working with government officials rather than fighting them.

Chantell and Michael Sackett purchased a 0.63-acre lot for $23,000 in 2005 to build a home near scenic Priest Lake in Idaho. After obtaining local permits in 2007, the couple began grading the property with soil and rock in preparation for construction of a three-bedroom house.

But the project came to a halt after EPA officials arrived at the site and informed the Sacketts that the property was a wetland. The regulators said the couple?s efforts to grade the land constituted a form of pollution under the federal Clean Water Act.

The Sacketts disagreed with the ?wetlands? designation, noting that a road ran between their property and Priest Lake and that their lot was in a residentially zoned subdivision containing other homes.

The EPA responded by issuing a ?compliance order,? requiring them to take immediate action to remove all deposited fill material and restore the lot to its original condition. The order required them to plant new trees and shrubs and to maintain a fence around the lot for three growing seasons.

Fine of $37,500 a day

The restoration would cost an estimated $27,000, according to the Sacketts. The EPA added a potent incentive ? the Sacketts would be fined $37,500 each day the couple failed to bring the property within compliance of the EPA order.

The Sacketts asked the EPA to conduct an administrative hearing to examine whether the property really was a ?wetland? subject to federal regulation. The agency refused.

That?s when the Sacketts took their case to federal court, hoping a district judge would conduct a hearing to determine whether the EPA had jurisdiction over their land.

The judge threw the case out. A panel of the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals also dismissed the case.

The courts ruled that since the EPA action was merely an administrative order, and not final action by the agency, the Sacketts could not file a federal lawsuit until the agency took enforcement action against them.

The case is important because it raises a question about the scope of federal regulation under the Clean Water Act and what recourse, if any, land owners have once they are threatened with potentially bankrupting administrative orders.

Lawyers for the Sacketts are asking the court to decide whether they are entitled to take their dispute to a federal judge, and if not, whether the agency action violates the Sacketts? constitutional right to due process.

A $200,000 solution?

One solution suggested by the appeals court was that the Sacketts could apply for a federal permit. If the permit was denied, they could then appeal the denial in federal court.

But lawyers for the Sacketts say this would only allow the Sacketts to challenge the permit determination, not the underlying compliance order. The regulations require the Sacketts to resolve the compliance order before applying for a permit.

Intel to launch biggest ad campaign in 8 years

(AP) ? Betting big on its "ultrabook" concept, Intel says it will launch its largest advertising campaign since 2003.

The campaign to push the new thinner and lighter notebook computers will start in April, says Kevin Sellers, Intel's head of advertising. He didn't say how much Intel Corp. would spend on the ads and other initiatives. He spoke to the press on Monday, ahead of the opening of the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Though it chiefly makes processors, Intel often prods PC makers to build their products in certain ways. The "ultrabooks" are similar to Apple's MacBook Air, which launched three years ago. PC makers have responded well to the ultrabook idea. Intel says there are 75 models on the way.

Beyonce And Jay-Z Welcome Baby Girl1676906

Superstar couple are reportedly calling their first child Blue Ivy.

The year's most anticipated new arrival is finally here: Beyoncé Knowles and Jay-Z (nee Shawn Carter) welcomed Ivy Blue Carter, a healthy baby girl, into the world on Saturday (January 7) in New York at Lenox Hill Hospital, according to E! News.

Beyoncé surprised and delighted fans around the world back in August when she not-so-subtly announced her pregnancy on our very own VMA stage. Rumors have been swirling about the sex of the new bundle of joy since Beyoncé's close friend and former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland let it slip that "it" might be a "she." "I have no idea what I'm going to buy Beyoncé at the baby shower because Jay is going to buy that little girl every single thing possible," she told told U.K. news agency Bang Showbiz. "She won't be spoiled, but she will be very well looked-after."

Fans are just as excited for Jay and B's bundle of joy. MTV News spoke to some of them recently, and many said that they expect the newborn to jump right to the top of the celebrity baby power list. "A power baby, obviously," one fan said of the youngster's assumed superstar status, while another added, "It's gonna be a pretty cool baby, that's for sure. Probably gonna run New York City by the time he's 13 or 14." Share your congratulations for Beyoncé and Jay-Z on our Facebook page!

For Gingrich, attacks on Romney come with a risk

Ron Paul, R-Texas, center, listens during a Republican presidential candidate debate at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, N.H. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

(AP) ? Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is demanding that Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney tell the public more about how he operated as a venture capitalist, saying the GOP can't have a nominee who will be vulnerable to Obama campaign charges of corporate raiding.

Gingrich tells NBC's "Today" show he hasn't seen a new campaign film that will run in his behalf in South Carolina, a production that faults the former Massachusetts governor as a ruthless corporate raider whose work often cost people their jobs.

Gingrich says Romney "owes us a report on his stewardship" of Bain Capital in the last several years.

The Georgia Republican acknowledges that his campaign was thrown off stride by Romney's negative ads in Iowa and said he doesn't intend to let that happen again elsewhere.

Mitt Romney is a timid Massachusetts moderate, a flip-flopper on abortion and gun rights. As governor, he raised taxes and even tried to hike fees on the blind. Also, Romney is a liar full of "pious baloney" ? according to Newt Gingrich.

The former House speaker left his "positive campaign" strategy behind in the cornfields of Iowa, where Romney's allies smacked him with a series of negative ads that helped knock Gingrich out of contention in the state's leadoff caucuses.

Plowing through New Hampshire before Tuesday's primary, Gingrich is indulging an innate sharp edge that has won him attention ? and enemies ? from his days as a back-bencher in the House in the 1980s. Now as always, he risks nicking himself in the process.

"Gingrich is doing it the way you shouldn't, which is a mean, nasty, transparently negative attack on Mitt Romney," says Michael Dennehy, the political director for Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign four years ago. "It comes across to everyone now. It helps Mitt Romney's opponents. It's not going to help him."

Some New Hampshire voters are pushing back.

At a health care event in Lebanon an attendee, Peter Miller, lectured Gingrich for "conducting politics as if you were a suicide bomber engaged in hostage negotiation."

Gingrich demurred.

"I think that's a mythology," he replied.

Gingrich knows firsthand that attacks can be effective and risky. He made a career of attacking opponents personally, from House Speaker Jim Wright on down. Gingrich's rhetorical aggression also helped him lead the Republicans to the House majority in 1994. But Gingrich's style left him little goodwill among his own lieutenants. He was forced to resign as speaker after the 1998 GOP election losses.

As a presidential candidate in the 2012 election, he was bloodied in Iowa by millions of dollars in brutal television ads, many funded by a super PAC backing Romney. Once a front-runner in Iowa polls, Gingrich tumbled to a distant fourth-place finish in the state.

Winning Our Future, a super PAC supporting Gingrich, has purchased $3.4 million in ad buys in South Carolina, according to Rick Tyler, who is helping lead the effort. The spots, in what is considered a critical state for the former Georgia congressman, are expected to go after Romney.

Contrasting records is fair game, Gingrich says, issuing a new pledge against slinging mud.

"I don't have the money and I will not engage in the kind of vicious negativity that, frankly, drove me down in Iowa," he said Friday night to an overflow crowd packed into a high-school cafeteria in Salem. "I'm going to fight honestly on the facts and draw the contrasts."

But Gingrich is famous for hyperbole and a lightning-fast response reflex that, deployed effectively, can knock a candidate as robust as Romney.

"The only reason you didn't become a career politician is because you lost to Teddy Kennedy in 1994," Gingrich shot across the debate stage last month, hitting a bull's-eye with his reference to Romney's unsuccessful Senate bid.

Other times, Gingrich's frankness can be harsh.

He has called Romney a "liar" and also said President Barack Obama would laugh at Romney if he were the nominee.

And during a pair of presidential debates over the weekend, Gingrich held little back.

He called Romney "a relatively timid Massachusetts moderate who even the Wall Street Journal said had an economic plan so timid it resembled Obama."

When Romney denied being a career politician, Gingrich chided him: "Can we drop a little bit of the pious baloney?"

It's all left some in New Hampshire ? where Romney is close to a hometown boy ? scratching their heads.

"Is the purpose to destroy Romney? Very often this becomes a double-sided sword," said Phyllis Woods, New Hampshire's Republican national committeewoman, who also worries that Gingrich could be unintentionally helping Democrats.

"I think there is a danger that the negativity expressed by Newt Gingrich could work against him," she said. "But it's certainly not good for the party as a whole. I would hope people would count to 10 and take a deep breath."

There's a long and storied history of candidates in both parties ripping into each other during primary campaigns only to make up afterward.

Hillary Rodham Clinton regularly attacked Obama four years ago, calling him "a hypocrite," among other insults. Clinton, of course, is now the secretary of state in the Obama administration. Sen. John McCain assailed Romney in the hard-fought 2008 campaign but endorsed him this go-round.

And Sam Pimm, Gingrich's New Hampshire field operations director, said he's heard no complaints from residents.

"I think it's about time people heard the truth about Governor Romney's record," he said.

But Gingrich's problem, other New Hampshire Republicans say, stems from his recent promise not to go negative.

"He was supposed to be the nice positive guy and framed himself that way," said Kevin Smith, a GOP candidate for New Hampshire governor. "It's only an issue because he seems to be going back on his word of running a positive campaign."

Big in Japan Dec 26 ? Jan 1: Mario Kart 7

Nintendo's kart racer is riding high amidst the PS Vita's slump.

The week of December 26 was not a good time for Sony in Japan, with the publisher's newly released portable system, the PlayStation Vita, sagging in sales on both the software and hardware fronts. Conversely, Nintendo's 3DS and the just-released Mario Kart 7 were the top earners for the week, according to the recent Media Creates sales update.

The PS Vita numbers continued to drop in its third week, from 72,479 to 42,648 units, with no Vita titles in the top 20 sales list. On the flip side, Sony's other consoles continued to do well in Japan--the PS3 held second place, with 67,199 units sold, while the PSP was just behind with 62,746 units sold.

Meanwhile, Nintendo sold 197,952 units of the 3DS for the particular week. Mario Kart 7 was in first place, with 109,463 units sold; the racing title stood alongside the 3DS iteration of Monster Hunter, with 100,042 units sold. Super Mario 3D Land was in fourth place, with 68,483 units sold, while Inazuma Eleven Go was in sixth place, with 47,938 units sold.

The only new title among the top 20 was Idolmaster Anime & G4U Pack Vol.3 for the PS3. The virtual idol simulator bundle sold 18,992 units in its debut week. Other noteworthy highlights include the recent Musou Orochi 2 for the PS3 (third place, with 73,526 units sold) and the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII-2 staying strong at fifth place (61,202 units sold).

The Obama administration is rewriting its defense strategy to absorb hundreds of billions of dollars in the U.S. defense budget cuts while scaling back the longstanding Pentagon goal of being ready to fight two wars simultaneously. The strategy, to be outlined at a news conference also attended by Panetta and Dempsey, is not expected to mark a big change in defense priorities. It may set the stage, however, for expected cutbacks in Europe and big weapons programs. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)

(AP) ? Looking beyond the wars he inherited, President Barack Obama on Thursday launched a reshaping and shrinking of the military. He vowed to preserve U.S. pre-eminence even as the Army and Marine Corps shed troops and the administration considers reducing its arsenal of nuclear weapons.

The changes won't come without risk, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said. But he called it acceptable and, because of budget restraints, inevitable.

In a presentation at the Pentagon, Obama said the U.S. is "turning a page" after having killed Osama bin Laden, withdrawn troops from Iraq and begun to wind down the war in Afghanistan. He outlined a vision for the future that some Republican lawmakers quickly dubbed wrong-headed.

"Our military will be leaner, but the world must know the United States is going to maintain our military superiority," Obama said with Panetta and the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, Gen. Martin Dempsey, at his side.

In a presidential election year the strategy gives Obama a rhetorical tool to defend his Pentagon budget-cutting choices. Republican contenders for the White House already have attacked him on national security issues including missile defense, Iran and planned reductions in ground forces.

Obama unveiled the results of an eight-month defense strategy review that is intended to guide decisions on cutting hundreds of billions from planned Pentagon spending over the coming decade. The eight-page document contained no details about how broad concepts for reshaping the military ? such as focusing more on Asia and less on Europe ? will translate into troop or weapons cuts.

Those details will be included in the 2013 defense budget to be submitted to Congress next month.

In about every major war or defense speech Obama hits themes intended to resonate with American voters ? mainly, that the United States is turning a page from two wars, and that any nation-building will focus on improving the United States, not strategic allies abroad.

The economy is more likely to determine Obama's re-election fate than national security. To keep his promises to shrink the deficit and to prove he is serious about fiscal management to voters wary of enormous government spending, Obama must show the oft-protected Pentagon is not exempt.

The political danger, though, is that his opponents will use any slashing of spending to paint the president as weak on security.

Both Panetta and Dempsey said they anticipate heavy criticism of their new strategy, which was begun last spring by then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates after Obama called for defense spending cuts. The Pentagon now faces at least $487 billion in cuts in planned defense spending over 10 years.

The criticism from Republicans came quickly.

Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, issued a statement saying, "This is a lead-from-behind strategy for a left-behind America." He called it a "retreat from the world in the guise of a new strategy."

Panetta said that smaller military budgets will mean some trade-offs and that the U.S. will take on "some level of additional but acceptable risk." But in a changing world the Pentagon would have been forced to make a strategy shift anyway, he said. The money crisis merely forced the government's hand.

Obama wants the new strategy to represent a pivotal point in his stewardship of defense policy, which has been burdened by two expensive wars begun under President George W. Bush. The drag those conflicts placed on military resources has deferred other priorities.

Obama said his administration would not repeat the mistakes made after World War II and Vietnam when defense reductions left the military ill-prepared.

"As commander in chief, I will not let that happen again," he said. "Not on my watch."

Obama's involvement in the defense review and his decision to personally announce it at the Pentagon underscore that he is not just a commander in chief coping with a slimmer military in debt-ridden times. He is also an incumbent president seeking a second term and wanting to show who's in charge.

Dempsey praised the military strategy and the work of crafting it, calling it inclusive and comprehensive.

"It's not perfect," the general said. "There will be people who think it goes too far. Others will say it doesn't go nearly far enough. That probably makes it about right. It gives us what we need."

Obama said the military will be reshaped between now and 2020 with an emphasis on countering terrorism, maintaining a nuclear deterrent, protecting the U.S. homeland and "deterring and defeating aggression by any potential adversary."

Those are not new military missions, and Obama announced no new capabilities or defense initiatives. He described a U.S. force that will retain much of its recent focus, with the exception of fighting a large-scale, prolonged conflict like the recently ended Iraq mission or the ongoing war in Afghanistan.

"U.S. forces will no longer be sized to conduct large-scale, prolonged stability operations," the strategy document said, referring to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Left unsaid: The military was not sized for those unexpectedly long wars when they began. The Army had to be expanded by tens of thousands of soldiers and the Marine Corps also grew. The military at the time of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was being shaped in somewhat the same form as Obama's vision for 2020: agile, flexible, reliant on high-tech weaponry and dependent on allies.

The new strategy moves the U.S. further from its longstanding goal of being able to successfully fight two major regional wars at the same time.

It said the U.S. will maintain a robust nuclear arsenal but hinted at reductions.

"It is possible that our deterrence goals can be achieved with a smaller nuclear force, which would reduce the number of nuclear weapons in our inventory as well as their role in U.S. national security strategy," the strategy said.

The new strategy strongly suggests a reduced U.S. military presence in Europe, notwithstanding a continuing close relationship with NATO, and says Asia will be a bigger priority. It also emphasizes improving U.S. capabilities in the areas of cyberwarfare, missile defense, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen praised the U.S. strategy, calling it consistent with the alliance's vision for collective defense.
