PROVO ? BYU offensive coordinator Robert Anae compares the football season to a marathon.
That?s why he isn?t making too much of the Cougars? first scrimmage of fall camp before a crowd of approximately 10,000 fans Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
?When you?re looking at a marathon, not too many people ask a question about how did your first five steps go,? Anae said. ?That?s where we are, guys. We?re just starting. Yeah, the first five steps were not bad. But we?re just leaving the starting gate. We?re looking at this as a marathon in development.?
The Cougars held a practice at the stadium before the abbreviated, three-series scrimmage, which was highlighted by quarterback Taysom Hill leading the only touchdown drive ? a 16-play, 80-yard march that was capped by running back Adam Hine?s 2-yard run.
?I was happy with the way that we finished,? said Hill, who completed 5 of 8 passes for 55 yards and ran three times for 20 yards.
?The one drive from our offense at the end was what I?ve seen throughout fall camp to this point,? coach Bronco Mendenhall said. ?It was the cleanest representation of offensive football that I saw for today. Defensively, I thought they were sound in general. It looked like they got tired toward the end of practice. ? It didn?t look like they were as fresh as the beginning of camp. ? I didn?t think we were as physical today, especially offensively as what we had been ? not only running it or blocking. So that didn?t seem quite as sharp. But overall, a solid day to work.?
Backup quarterback Ammon Olsen threw an impressive touchdown pass to wide receiver Mitch Mathews during red zone work.
Mendenhall?s evaluation of the quarterbacks?
?Ammon has been sharper than he was today, especially in throwing it,? the coach said. ?He?s moved the team very closely to what Taysom has. The one drive at the end was 15 or 16 plays. Taysom did a really nice job of orchestrating that, commanding the team.?
Perhaps the biggest cheer from the crowd came during a red zone drill after Hill slid at the end of a run. It was a welcome sight for Cougar fans who have tired of watching QBs get injured while running the ball.
?I kind of chuckled to myself after I slid and heard the crowd,? Hill said. ?It was cool.?
?He?s a coachable kid. We coach that; we work on that,? Anae said of Hill?s slide. ?In the course of a game, that?s what we hope the quarterbacks do. ? That?s how he practices.?
On Saturday, Anae?s high-tempo offense wasn?t as fast as previous practices.
?There were times when guys were sluggish, walking around,? Anae said. ?That?s kind of the beauty of coming to the stadium. Some guys show up and start sleepwalking. The purpose of the deal was to find out who can come here and go fast and play hard. On film, we?ll have a decent picture of that.?
?Today we were seeing our mental toughness and seeing if we can execute,? said wide receiver Ross Apo. ?This has been a really long week. We?ve been hitting since Tuesday. To come out here and go through practice with a scrimmage at the end, the coaches knew it would be tough. This is how it?s going to be in a game in the fourth quarter. We?re going to be tired. We run so much. I think this practice was more for mental toughness and execution.?
Mendenhall emphasized the kicking game Saturday, with Justin Sorensen, Vance ?Moose? Bingham and Trevor Samson taking turns on PATs and field goals.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? The plane accident that killed four people in a Connecticut neighborhood was not the first crash for the pilot, a former Microsoft executive who was taking his teenage son on a tour of East Coast colleges.
The pilot, Bill Henningsgaard, was killed along with his son, Maxwell, and two children who were in a house struck by the small propeller-driven plane on Friday. Their bodies were all recovered from the crash scene.
East Haven police on Saturday released the names of the crash victims, including Henningsgaard, 54, of Medina, Wash.; his 17-year-old son; 13-year-old Sade Brantley and 1-year-old Madisyn Mitchell, who lived in the East Haven home hit by the plane.
National Transportation Safety Board investigator Patrick Murray said Saturday the plane was upside down when it struck a house at about a 60 degree angle. He said the pilot was making his first approach to the airport and did not declare an emergency before the crash.
After removing the wreckage and before analyzing any data, he said at a news conference in New Haven, "We don't have any indication there was anything wrong with the plane."
A preliminary NTSB report on the crash is expected within 10 business days. A more in-depth report could take up to nine months.
Henningsgaard, a highly regarded philanthropist, was flying a small plane to Seattle in 2009 with his mother when the engine quit. He crash-landed on Washington's Columbia River.
"I forced myself to confront that fact that the situation any pilot fears ? a mid-air emergency, was happening right then, with my mother in the plane," he wrote in a blog post days later.
In the Connecticut crash, Henningsgaard was bringing the 10-seater plane, a Rockwell International Turbo Commander 690B, in for a landing at Tweed New Haven Airport in rainy weather just before noon when the plane struck two small homes, engulfing them in flames. The aircraft's left wing lodged in one house and its right wing in the other.
As the children's mother yelled for help from the front lawn, several people in the working-class neighborhood raced to rescue the children, but they were forced to turn back by the fire.
A neighbor, David Esposito, was among those who raced to help the children's mother. He said he ran into the upstairs of the house, where the woman believed her children were, but he couldn't find them after frantically searching a crib and closets. He returned downstairs to search some more, but he dragged the woman out when the flames became too strong.
The pilot's family had learned it was Bill Henningsgaard's plane through the tail number, said his brother, Blair Henninsgaard, the city attorney in Astoria, Ore.
In 2009, Bill Henningsgaard was flying from Astoria, Ore. with his 84-year-old mother to watch his daughter in a high school play when he crashed into the river as he tried to glide back to the airport. He and his mother, a former Astoria mayor, climbed out on a wing and were rescued.
Henningsgaard was a member of Seattle-based Social Venture Partners, a foundation that helps build up communities. The foundation extended its condolences to his wife and two daughters.
"There are hundreds of people that have a story about Bill ? when he went the extra mile, when he knew just the right thing to say, how he would never give up. He was truly all-in for this community, heart, mind and soul," the foundation wrote Friday in a post on its website.
Paul Shoemaker of Social Venture Partners told The Seattle Times that Henningsgaard was "an incredibly good, real, honest man, for the community, for his family, for this world."
"The guy has already done so much for the world. And he was going to do so much more," he said.
Henningsgaard spent 14 years at Microsoft in various marketing and sales positions, according to his biography on Social Venture Partners website. He was a longtime board member at Youth Eastside Services, a Bellevue, Wash.-based agency that provides counseling and substance-abuse treatment, and led the organization's $10.7 million fundraising campaign for its new headquarters, which opened in 2008.

The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance
David Epstein
Current, 2013 ($26.95)
Ever since the successful mapping of the human genome a decade ago, scientists have sought genes that distinguish top athletes from the rest of us, yielding fresh insights into the age-old question of nature versus nurture. As a former competitive runner and current Sports Illustrated senior writer, Epstein is well equipped to explain the complexities of the ?sports gene? search. Time and time again, his deeply researched and nuanced investigations of the genetics underlying the athleticism of different races, genders and individuals reinforce a comforting, commonsense conclusion: excelling at sports isn't just a matter of natural talent or nurtured practice?it's both.

A recent Twitter study of WWE and UFC revealed that per capita, based on tweets mentioning the brand name, the best three states in the U.S. for WWE are New Jersey, New Hampshire and Connecticut. For UFC, the best three states are Nevada, Montana and New Mexico. In the case of both promotions, their best states are ones that their headquarters are based out of (WWE in Connecticut, and UFC in Nevada). This means it?s a metric most likely moved by talent and other employees within each respective company. Geographically speaking, the best states for WWE (in no particular order) are New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maine, West Virginia, Kentucky, Colorado and Wisconsin. The worst states for WWE (also in no particular order) are Utah, Oregon, Kansas, Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama. Clark Atlanta University (CAU) has been listed in the top 650 American colleges and universities by Forbes. CAU ranks no. 625 and is one of only 16 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to make the list.
"Given a still struggling American economy and a population of students who have traditionally been underserved, we are delighted for our inclusion in the Forbes list of top colleges," said CAU President Carlton E. Brown "Also, with our classification as a Research institution, researchers in such areas as prostate cancer, nanotechnology and safe drinking water are steadfast in their work, and our stellar faculty members continue to demonstrate high expectations."
This year, which marks the university's 25th anniversary, CAU qualified for the installation of two national honor societies, Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi. Phi Eta Sigma is the first and largest honor society devoted to the achievement of the first-year college student. CAU is only the third HBCU with a chapter. Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society, and the university is the first private HBCU to be granted a chapter.
"These societies will serve as new platforms for the pursuit of academic excellence to prepare our students for global responsibility," said Brown.
For the sixth year, to produce the list of top schools, Forbes has partnered with the Washington, D.C.-based Center for College Affordability and Productivity. Forbes looked at factors that directly concern today's incoming students (and their families) who will be footing a bill: Will my classes be interesting? Is it likely I will graduate in four years? Will I incur a ton of debt getting my degree? And once I get out of school, will I get a good job and be a leader in my chosen profession?
The complete listing of top colleges and universities can be found at Forbes.com.

A former women?s head rowing coach at the University of California at San Diego gave six athletes prescription drugs on at least 24 occasions, the National Collegiate Athletic Association said Tuesday, announcing penalties stemming from unethical conduct and the university?s failure to monitor the program. Athletes also competed while ineligible, in some cases, with the knowledge and at the direction of coaches, the NCAA?s public infractions report says.
The former head coach also lied to NCAA investigators about having told athletes to compete and sign for meals under the names of ?eligible student-athletes or other individuals.? The rowing team will get one year of probation, a $2,500 fine and vacation of women?s rowing results from 2010-12. The former head coach faces a three-year show cause order, making it difficult for her to be hired at another institution, and a former assistant coach who allowed an ineligible athlete to compete and then lied to investigators faces a one-year show cause order.
