The keys to growing a great family - Kiwi Families

With my husband and I due to have our first child in approximately three weeks, the topic of growing a great family has become a key focus for me.

While I am not a mother yet, I spent a year in the USA caring for four year old twins Alison and Elisabeth so I feel as if I know a thing or two about raising a great family. The enjoyment of being an Au Pair included the ability to step into a completely new family environment and challenge some of the ideas the family had, and in many ways strengthen some of the values I had been brought up with.

Both my Host parents were very engaged with their children ? in particular, my Host father who was, and continues to be, a very actively involved dad. This was quite unusual in the environment where we lived and I very much appreciated both parents taking such an active interest in their children?s lives.

The key strength my Host father possessed when raising these girls was the ability to be very loving, yet fair. This brings me to my first point of raising a great family ? unconditional love and unequivocal fairness. With children, I think it is paramount that they know and feel loved.? However, it is also vital that they understand the importance of fairness. As a parent it can sometimes be a challenge to have consistency in your approach with your children. Therefore, clear boundaries must underlie the fairness principle and you must be consistent when you apply these boundaries.

Raising children is never easy and I think it adds an additional dimension when you are raising twins. The simple reason for this is that many people expect twins to grow at an identical pace and often compare their skills. I find this practice appalling and it used to frustrate me when people would compare the girls to one another and assume that one was ahead or behind based on the other twin?s ability.

This brings me to my next point when raising a great family ? fostering individuality. I believe that it is imperative for parents and friends/family to encourage and foster each child?s individuality. By identifying and building on their strengths, you will grow a confident and well-rounded individual.? In this process, it is also extremely important to foster curiosity and allow your child to ask a million questions and endeavour to provide an answer ? or even better, find out the answer with them!

At the end of the day, the key to delivering the principles I have spoken of above (unconditional love, unequivocal fairness and fostering individuality) you, as a parent, must have the time and ability to listen to the needs of your child. I think that taking time to listen to our children is the most important principle when raising a family and often is forgotten in the quest to balance work life vs. family life. Raising children is as much about the quantity of time that you spend with them, as it is the quality.

Lastly, but certainly not least, I believe the key to successfully growing a great family is to have a strong and loving relationship with your child?s other parent. As parents you must show a united front and support each other in decisions that are made. A child learns how to love, how to respect their future partner and how a relationship should be by observing their parent?s relationship. If that relationship is fraught with arguments and instability then that child will assume that this is the acceptable behaviour.? Instead, parents must work together to raise their children and not forget why that child is there in the first place ? because you love each other and prior to being parents together you had your own separate relationship. While trying to maintain this with a young family is a challenge, there are certainly ways of achieving a balance.? By prioritising yourself and your relationship with your partner you will naturally grow a great family.

Hundreds protest toughening Spain's abortion law

MADRID (AP) ? Several hundred people have held a demonstration against a government proposal to make it harder for women to get abortions in Spain.

The protesters in Madrid included one young woman who wrote the slogan "Judges and priests away from my body" on her stomach.

Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon has said he will ask Parliament to change the law, including a new requirement for parental permission in cases where 16- and 17-year-olds want to end pregnancies.

In 2010, Spain's Socialist government changed the law to allow abortions without restrictions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy, and for 16- and 17-year-olds without parental permission.

Gallardon's right-leaning Popular Party won a landslide victory in November and has promised to carry out its campaign pledge to tighten abortion laws.

The Way Forward for Renewable Energy in Central America

Central America?relies heavily on petroleum imports and unsustainable forms of large hydropower to meet its energy needs. Existing economic and political incentives are distorting markets in favor of fossil fuels and displacing the potential for better power solutions, including renewable energy.?Their dependence on conventional energy sources has had wide-ranging social, environmental, and economic impacts, hampering development in the region.

The region?s governments have embraced a variety of policies to promote renewable energy, yet while, these have not been effective enough to advance renewables to their full potential.?Support mechanisms are often insufficient, only partially implemented, or ineffectively administered, and they compete with strong existing subsidies and support for conventional energy sources. Central American countries have begun to integrate their political and economic systems through the signing of the Tegucigalpa Protocol and the establishment of the Central American Integration System (SICA).

There is now more opportunity than ever to rapidly advance sustainable energy in Central America. The economic and grid integration represents a tremendous opportunity for transitioning to renewable energy.

Meanwhile, the larger network of transmission lines and transfer stations presents greater opportunities to address the intermittency of renewable resources. In addition to grid-connected strategies, there are options for micro-grid and off-grid solutions, including small-scale distributed renewable energy technologies that can help improve energy access for low-income and marginalized communities.

Central America countries ? which includes Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama-? can learn from each other?s experiences and replicate best practices. This is what CDKN and the Energy and Environment Partnership with Central America (EEP) are aiming to, by supporting a project lead by the World Watch Institute (WWI), during 2012 -2014.

The WWI, with CDKN support, will?undertake a three-year research and advisory program that includes three project implementation phases. Phases 2 and 3 will be fine-tuned according to the results of Phase 1, which is currently being implemented.

Phase 1: Creation of a network of experts and initial study of the status of renewable energy and existing best practices

During 2012, Worldwatch will engage in a comprehensive data distillation, literature review, and analysis of renewable energy technologies in Central America. The reporte will highlight best practices in policymaking, finance, and project development at the regional, national, and subnational levels. Project outputs will include:

  • A web forum to connect stakeholders across the region and build an expert network?with?the goal of learning from each other;
  • Three regional workshops to engage local partners, governments, industry, the media, and international organizations;
  • An outreach campaign to circulate research findings through blogs, op-eds,?and social media channels; and
  • A final report that summarizes their findings on the status of renewable energy development in the Central America region.

Phase 2: Sustainable Energy Roadmaps

During 2013?14, Worldwatch will design comprehensive energy roadmaps for the seven SICA member countries. In keeping with the Institute?s sustainable energy development model, the roadmaps will consist of energy efficiency and renewable resource assessments, grid and storage solutions, analysis of socioeconomic impacts of different energy pathways, as well as policy and finance options for the rapid advance of sustainable energy solutions. (See Diagram)

Phase 3:?Integration and training

During 2014, Worldwatch will present the sustainable energy roadmaps to various stakeholders in Central America, including national and sub-national political personnel as well as business and industry experts. They will highlight regional and international best practices to showcase new opportunities for sustainable energy deployment, as well as train stakeholders in using roadmap data for new project development. The Institute, along with regional and international partners, will play an advisory role in planning key projects.

Improvements To Increase The Energy Efficiency Of Your Home ...

When it is time to make serious improvements to your home, engage the services of a competent general contractor. Shop around and make careful comparisons. A competent and honest, general contractor, can complete home improvements professionally. A contractor can also perform home improvement work cheaper than you can manage, by doing it yourself.

Choose stains, paints, glues, and sealants which are produced in a manner that won?t release chemicals into your air when you use them. Look for low No-VOC items, but also try to find paints made with milk protein, clay, earth pigments, or lime. Stains can be made with linseed or citrus oil.

If you?re looking for a low cost way to improve the look of your home?s interior, add a fresh coat of paint. Make sure you choose a neutral color. Dark or drab colors can make a room feel oppressive and confining. Painting with neutral colors will give rooms a fresh, airy feeling of openness.

If you have a home improvement project, why not involve the neighbors? Look into tool borrowing websites to borrow goods from your neighbors. You can borrow expensive tools for just a fraction of the cost; saving you lots of money, and enabling you to have the tools you need when you need them. Bonus! You get to meet and know your neighbors, making your neighborhood a better, happier place to live.

Consider adding an extra bathroom to boost the value of your home. Even if you do not plan on using it except when you have a guest over, the expenses linked to an additional bathroom are definitely worth it. If you have a house with two levels, build the bathrooms on top of one another to save on plumbing.

If you are hiring someone to perform your home improvement work, never pay more than 10% down or $1000, whichever sum is less. Legally, a contractor is not able to accept more than this figure. If he asks for additional funds, it is a sign that the person you hired may not be very reputable.

Are you planning a big home improvement project that requires a lot of hard manual labor that you cannot do alone? One way to get the job done while also saving money is to use temporary laborers from a service. You can choose how many experienced people you need and what time they will arrive and leave each day.

If you find yourself falling in love with a particular pattern of wallpaper but find that it?s either out of your price range or not quite durable enough for high-traffic areas, consider buying a roll of it anyway for decorative purposes. You can easily have it matted and framed, or can keep it around the house for smaller, more craft-type projects.

Wallpaper borders are no longer as popular as they once were. However, you can add nice designs to your wall without them. Buy some stencils at your local craft store in a theme that matches your home decor and paint them in a line on your wall where normally the wallpaper border would go. This creates a nice visual effect for your eyes to follow in the room.

If you don?t already have some, install some ceiling fans in all your rooms. You can use these to cool rooms and circulate the air, reducing the need to use your air conditioning unit. This in turn will save you money on your electric bill and most likely increase the life expectancy of your air conditioner.

When it comes to home improvement, small things such as replacing your central air blower?s air filters are essential. This is important both to the efficiency of the blower, as well as being a necessary maintenance procedure. If you allow dust and dirt to gather and even bypass the filter, it will gather within the moving parts of the blower and eventually cause it to fail.

If you browse through the tips from this site, you are sure to find a tip that can bring your home to a whole new level of beauty. If you apply some of these tips today, your home will be on its way to truly being improved.

Businesses brace for drought's effects

Scott Olson / Getty Images

Farmers are suffering from the drought. But they are going to have a lot of company soon.

By Issie Lapowsky, Inc.com

Magnolia Bakery, a posh New York City-based cupcake chain, is in many ways insulated from America's heartland -- its tumultuous politics, its strip malls, and, most recently, its parched farmland that now blankets thousands of miles of the center of the United States.

But as the Midwest is in the throes of the worst drought to hit the United States since the 1950s, the CEO of Magnolia is bracing for the dry weather's ramifications from the company's headquarters in Manhattan.

"This drought is going to affect us in many ways," Magnolia CEO Steve Abrams says. "We just don't know how badly yet."

Aside from the price of wheat, which has increased 55 percent in the last month according to Reuters, Abrams is most worried about the cost of fuel. The damage the drought has done to the U.S. Corn Belt has sent ethanol prices soaring -- and has caused some ethanol plants to halt production. That means Magnolia is likely to face fuel surcharges as it trucks its already pricey wheat across the country.

Abrams says he even expects the dairy farms he sources from in upstate New York to raise their prices, because of the increasing cost of running tractors and transporting ingredients to New York City.

"These are costs I have to absorb. It's not like I can charge customers a fuel surcharge with their cupcakes," Abrams says, adding that he has not yet calculated how high those charges will be. "It's amazing the cascade of issues this drought creates and the ripple effects it's causing across the economy."

The scariest part is, Abrams knows, in comparison to other sectors of the small-business community, the problems his business will face are slight.

About one-third of the United States has now been declared a disaster area by the U.S. government. While all eyes are on farmers, who feel the most direct effect of a dry growing season, the actual scope of the drought's effect on other small businesses could also be enormous. So huge, in fact, that the Small Business Administration is now offering disaster-assistance loans of up to $2 million for nonfarm businesses and nonprofits in more than 1,400 drought-afflicted counties.

One major source of the problem, of course, is corn, a fuel source, a food source, and a key ingredient in feed for animals. On Sunday, the National Agricultural Statistics Service released a report declaring that nearly half the country's corn is in "poor" or "very poor" condition. Although rain on Tuesday gave Midwestern farmers some hope and caused corn prices to fall slightly, to $7.90 per bushel, experts say much of the damage has already been done.

"Corn matures by about Labor Day, but what happens in dry conditions is it shuts down early if it doesn't get any moisture," says Kevin Kimle, an agricultural economist at Iowa State University. "When the cost of a base ingredient like corn goes up, it fundamentally affects everything."

According to Brian Fuchs, a climatologist at the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska, this means the meat industry is expected to take an especially severe beating. The higher corn prices get, the harder it is for farmers to feed their livestock, meaning animals are being sent to slaughterhouses in droves.

"This creates a glut of meat and forces prices to go down in the short term," Fuchs says. "Once that glut is gone, prices spike from lack of supply, and it will take several calving seasons to build that supply up again."

Executives at Hurricane Grill & Wings, a restaurant chain based in West Palm Beach, Florida, are already working on what COO Mark Snyder calls "menu engineering," in preparation for those price increases. Because poultry prices are expected to increase soonest, the chain will begin promoting pork, seafood, and beef items in the short term. Once beef and pork prices spike, as they?re expected to next year, executives plan to reduce portion sizes and supplement meals with lower-cost sides.

The heat and dry conditions have already taken a toll on the size of animals raised for meat, says Herb Eckhouse, co-founder of the artisan cured meat company La Quercia, based in Norwalk, Iowa. About a month ago, he began noticing the hams being delivered to his factory were getting progressively smaller. La Quercia pays suppliers by the piece, not by the pound. That means that though Eckhouse's costs remain the same, the amount of meat he's getting is diminishing significantly. Prior to the drought, Eckhouse was planning on expanding to a larger facility to keep up with growth. Now, he says, that may not be necessary. It may not even be possible.

"My concern is, what happens next year when the meat supply just isn't there?" Eckhouse says. "I've been involved with agriculture in the Midwest for 30 years, and this is entirely outside of my experience."

Even businesses that aren't tied to grain or meat have felt the strain. The U.S. Drought Monitor has collected stories of boating companies struggling from falling water tables, golf courses suffering from irrigation restrictions, and waterparks forced to shut down rides. Another odd side effect?

"This Christmas, there will be no kissing under the mistletoe," says Michele Sutton, owner of Sutton Ferneries, a Doral, Florida-based distributor of fresh flowers and foliage. Sutton says the drought has completely wiped out the country's supply of mistletoe, a seemingly small detail that she says will cost her more than $40,000 in sales this holiday.

Equally indicative of the drought's strange ripple effect are the businesses that are actually benefiting from the lack of water. Wheeler Drilling, a residential water well company in Odessa, Texas, has drilled wells at nearly twice as many homes this year as it did last year, thanks to citywide water restrictions that took effect in April. And at Woods Basement Systems, a foundation remodeling company based in Collinsville, Illinois, business is booming, as the dry soil is causing foundations to settle and crack. "If it continues like this, it'll be a record year," says Tim Warchol, the company's director of commercial sales.

Of course, not everyone will be so lucky. Gary Bohrer was 19 years old when he founded the Waukesha, Wisconsin-based landscaping company Central Services in 1974. Now, he's counting down the months he can keep the company afloat. That is, if it doesn't rain soon.

Since May, Bohrer's business has been at a near standstill. Planting trees, sodding, and maintaining landscape, three of Central Services's key offerings, are simply out of the question in severe drought areas such as Waukesha. In the average year, Central Services generates about $2 million. This year, Bohrer says, he'll make well under half that, if he's lucky. As a result, Borhrer says, he's been forced to fire 18 of his 26 employees, some of whom had worked for Central for the past 20 years.

"I saw it coming, but it was still incredibly hard," Bohrer says. "This is usually the heyday of our working season, when our guys are making overtime. I know it's not going to be easy for them."

Ami Gives a Unique Look at Rav Elyashiv, zt?l, from Inside His Household

(Thursday, July 26th, 2012)

The passing of Rav Elyashiv has left the Jewish world mourning the posek hador. Much of what has been said and written about him has focused on his absolute dedication to Torah learning and rejection of the physical to maintain his learning. But this week?s Ami exposes a lesser-known side of the gadol.

Along with interviews of his grandsons, talmidim, and other members of his inner circle, Ami interviewed Rav Elyashiv?s daughters and daughters-in-laws about their great father and his relationship with them. They painted a picture of a loving and doting father, concerned about their happiness and success, and they gave a view of the joy and simplicity in a house dedicated to Torah and avodah.

Out of Africa: Startling New Genetics of Human Origins

Western Pygmies

I love population genetics for its ability to peer back into human history through the medium of DNA?s ATCGs.

One of the stars of this discipline is Sarah Tishkoff, a standout in African genetics, someone who will readily haul a centrifuge into the bush in Cameroon.

Tishkoff of the University of Pennsylvania is lead author on a paper published online July 26 in?Cell that details? whole-genome sequencing of five individuals each from three extant hunter-gatherer groups?the Pygmies of Cameroon as well as the Hadza and the Sandawe of Tanzania. The results reveal millions of newly discovered genetic variants?differences in single genetic letters, the ATCG?and indicate that early modern humans may have interbred long ago in Africa with another species of hominid (although the fossil record does not provide much support for the latter finding).

Tishkoff answered a few questions for us about this paper, co-authored with Joseph Lachance and 11 other researchers, and talked about where her work is headed. An edited version of the interview appears below:

Please describe the research that led to the paper that was published today:

We?re the first ones to look at these diverse groups of hunter-gathers in Africa who descend from some of the most ancestral lineages in the world. They?re? interesting because they have very unique and distinct lifestyles There are few? populations that maintain this active hunter-gatherer lifestyle.

This is the most extensive study in Africa using high-coverage deeply detailed sequence data. We focused on three groups because they?re? anthropologically interesting. They?re thought to be descended from groups that are ancestral to all modern humans. We wanted to understand genetic basis of adaptation to their local environment? including, for instance the short stature trait in Pygmies.

So what did you find?

We discovered 13 million variants and, of those variants, greater than 3 million are completely novel, meaning that they have not been reported in any database. The current public database has 40 million variants. So we found 3 million novel variants by simply sequencing 15 individuals. That increases by about 8 percent all known human genetic variation. It also demonstrates that we?re missing a lot of really important variation that?s out there, particularly in Africa, which is the? homeland of modern humans and a place where there?s been a lot of time for differentiation to have occurred in very diverse environments. What this means is that there?s s probably a lot of regional or population-specific variation out there that has not been that well characterized, some of which is functionally very important?

What about natural selection?

Natural selection seems to be operating more on the non-coding genome [the regulatory portion that does not contain genes] than the coding region. A lot of people are doing exome sequencing [looking only at genes]. I think they?re missing a lot of important variation.

In our study, we looked at what regions of these groups? genomes were uniquely differentiated to their local environments. There wasn?t a huge amount of overlap between the groups?or between them and other non-hunter-gatherer groups from Africa.? Due to natural selection, there were distinctive adaptations for? immunity, taste and smell.

In the Pygmies, we found genes involved with thermal regulation, immunity and stature, all likely to be adaptive to a tropical environment. We found genes related to pituitary and thyroid function, the latter perhaps an adaptation to a low-iodine environment.

In the Sandawe, we found a variant for? melanin, a gene involved in skin color.? The Sandawe are among the most fair-skinned groups in Africa. When I went to work with them, they said, ?We?re like brothers and sisters because you look like us.? This is not because of any European admixture; they look like the San [a hunter-gatherer group from southern Africa]. When I said: ?Where do you come from, they pointed to a mountain in the distance. When I said ?Can you take me there?? there was no road. We went through the bush and they showed me cave paintings. Having lived in South Africa, I?ve seen the cave paintings of the San.

What about interbreeding with other human species?

A number of studies have shown a low amount of interbreeding between early modern humans outside of Africa and archaic species outside of Africa including Neandertals and, in Asia, with the species they call Denisova. They?ve never found any evidence of Neandertal DNA in Africa. The problem is that you just don?t get good preservation of fossils in Africa.? So what we did was collaborate with Josh Akey and Ben Vernot at the University of Washington and used a statistic they developed to recognize regions of genome that appear to be of archaic origin.

The first thing we did is to test this statistic by applying it to non-Africans and we found a very strong enrichment for Neandertal DNA in those genomes. But we? don?t see that in the Africans. They have no Neandertal DNA. When we apply the statistic to Africans, though,? we still see a lot of evidence for interbreeding from a hominid who diverged from a common ancestor that we shared about 1.2 million years ago, about the time that Neandertals split off as well. This suggests that there could have been a sister species in Africa. What it was nobody knows. But it seems to show that modern humans have been interbreeding and it?s not unique to non-African species.

Why are African genetics so exciting?

Africa was the site of origin of all modern humans and if you want to learn about when, where and how we evolved, you want to look at this continent. It has a long history of population subdivision and adaptation of those populations to very distinct environments and a broad range of phenotypes, ranging from the short stature of the Pygmies to the? very tall stature of the pastoralists in the east. It also has very different disease exposure and very different disease prevalence throughout.

What?s next?

We want to expand our genome-wide analysis to other populations, and we want to do so with larger sample sizes. We?re going to continue to try to correlate genetic variants with different phenotypic traits. We?d love to do functional studies of these genes to see, for instance, how they are regulating pituitary development. Is there some totally novel mechanism involved. We?re going to look at the Pygmies and other groups with a systems approach. You can?t look at height, for instance, by itself. You have to look at it in relation to metabolism and immunity and see how everything interacts.

Dubai Police Chief Warns Of International Plot To ... - Business Insider

DUBAI (Reuters) - Dubai's chief of police has warned of an "international plot" to overthrow the governments of Gulf Arab countries, saying the region needs to be prepared to counter any threat from Islamist dissidents as well as Syria and Iran.

The comments by, one of the most outspoken security officials in the United Arab Emirates, follow the detention in the UAE since April of at least 20 dissidents, according to relatives of the detainees and activists.

"There's an international plot against Gulf states in particular and Arab countries in general...This is preplanned to take over our fortunes," Khalfan told reporters at a gathering late on Wednesday marking the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"The bigger our sovereign wealth funds and the more money we put in the banks of Western countries, the bigger the plot to take over our countries...The brothers and their governments in Damascus and North Africa have to know that the Gulf is a red line, not only for Iran but also for the Brothers as well."

Most of the detainees since April are Islamists, targeted by an official clampdown amid concern they may be emboldened by the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in other Arab countries such as Egypt.

UAE Interior Ministry officials have not been available to comment on the arrests. Last week, UAE officials announced that authorities were investigating a foreign-linked group planning "crimes against the security of the state".

"I had no idea that there is this large number of Muslim Brotherhood in the Gulf states. We have to be alert and on guard because the wider these groups become, the higher probability there is for trouble," Khalfan said on Wednesday.

"We are aware that there are groups plotting to overthrow Gulf governments in the long term."

Malaysia?s Multi-Religious Society threatened by ?Politics of Emotion and of Identity, says Tariq Ramadan

by Harakah Daily

European Muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan, penning some observations of his recent Malaysian tour, has warned that Malaysia?s multi-religious society and huge potential to play a significant role globally were being threatened by ?politics of emotion and of identity?.

?The fault-lines are visible, especially on the eve of anticipated elections,? said the Swiss academic, writing in his column in Dubai-based English daily Gulf News.

Tariq (right) opined that Malaysia, alongside Indonesia, has the potential to play significant role at the world economic stage, adding that the two countries had often been overlooked because attention was focused on China and India.

But he cautioned that despite Malaysia?s multi-cultural heritage as well as a ?first-rate? economic and geo-strategic potential, a cacophony of political tensions and slogans, many of which referred to Islam, posed obstacles.

Tariq, who spoke at several events in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, highlighted a prevalent view among the non-Muslim minority that they are being marginalised in the wake of Islam becoming a ?permanent reference in political debate?, comparing similar debates among Muslim minorities in the West.

?Like the mirror image of many Muslim citizens in the West, they may be perfectly respectful of the constitution, of the laws and prerogatives of the civil state, but it is as if they are slightly excluded from the shared narrative upon which the Malaysian nation is founded. It has proved difficult for them to achieve the fully equal status that would establish their sense of belonging to a pluralist society,? he said.

He noted how the presence of large number of Indonesian immigrants had fed into the existing political rhetoric, lamenting frequently hostile policy ?towards the very immigrants the country needs?.

The grandson of the founder of Egypt?s Muslim Brotherhood Hasan al-Banna, Tariq, who teaches at the Faculty of Oriental Studies in Oxford, also commented on what he described was a penchant for ?Islamising? modernism, capitalism and consumerism, ?a strange mixture indeed?.

Impressed with Perlis mosque

But what impressed him the most during his many tours here is a mosque in Perlis built along traditional architecture and which incorporates green technology.

Tariq said it was a far cry from the ?American-style modernism? which according to him characterised Kuala Lumpur?s buildings.

?The contrast between the capital, Kuala Lumpur, and other cities is striking. Here, looming skyscrapers surround the celebrated twin towers that challenge America?s tallest?

?There, a superb structure built on supporting piers, known as the ?floating mosque?, reflects the extraordinary maritime landscape. Fifty per cent of its electricity consumption is generated by wind turbines and, when completed, solar panels will account for its remaining energy needs: A ?green? mosque beneath whose dome Islamic scriptural references are inscribed in the five national languages, to signify that Islam is not the property of one language and one culture,? he wrote.

Tariq further hailed the mosque as possibly the ?symbol of Muslims? greatest contribution to an era in search of meaning: To express its specificity in universal terms, in full respect of pluralism and to respond in full awareness and with all necessary expertise, to the challenges of our time,? said Tariq, whose recent works include the book The Quest for Meaning.

He is believed to be referring to the Al-Hussain Mosque in Kuala Perlis (left). Facing the Straits of Malacca near the Kuala Perlis jetty, the construction of the mosque was financed by entrepreneur Ta Sri Mohd. Ariffin Yusuf to fulfill the dying wish of his brother Dr Mohd. Hussain after whom the mosque was named.

?This mosque is ultimately far more ?modern? than all the blind mimicry of American models,? added Tariq. ?What a pleasure to pray in such a mosque: one senses the encounter of intelligence and creative imagination.?
