iPhone 5 contract prices for UK phone networks revealed

UK phone networks announce iPhone 5 contract pricing

While Apple had its preorders primed since 8am BST, British carriers have only just unveiled their monthly prices for the newest iPhone. Vodafone will offer it on contracts from £25 per month -- with an initial £249 outlay) or free on £47 per month for two years. That free deal will net you a 16GB iPhone 5, with 2GB of data, unlimited texts and voice minutes. On Orange, a 24-month contract at £46 will nab you the same 16GB model for free, with 3GB of data and unlimited calls and texts. If you drop down to the £20 rate, you'll have to pay £320 upfront and pick up a lightweight bundle of 100MB of data, 50 texts and 50 minutes. EE stablemate T-Mobile aren't offering any free iPhones on its carrier plans, but you'll be able to glean unlimited internet (alongside 2000 voice minutes) on a 16GB iPhone 5 for £109 and £36 per month on contract. Confusingly, anyone looking to grab the UK's first LTE network on the iPhone 5 will have to sign up to a "4GEE from EE" plan -- which still hasn't revealed its pricing. We're checking with EE whether customers that decide to grab a new contract with Orange or T-Mobile will still be able to migrate across -- we'd hold off on that pre-order until we here back from the new 4G network. Three UK currently has the 16GB iPhone on its unlimited data One Plan at £79 upfront, on a £36 per month deal. We'll update once we hear more from EE -- as well as O2's plans.

Oppo CEO says quad-core Find 5 will feature a 1080p, 441ppi display, forgets to wink at HTC

Oppo CEO says quadcore Find 5 will feature a 1080p, 441ppi display, forgets to wink at HTC

Not sure how this slipped under our radar, but recently Oppo Mobile CEO Chen Mingyong teased that his upcoming flagship phone, the Find 5, will again feature a non-removable but "certainly big enough" battery (for the sake of anti-counterfeiting and, consequently, safety) as well as a 1080p, 441ppi display. That's right, 441ppi! We're finally getting something impossibly sharper than the 329ppi on the latest iPhones (up to 4-inch, 1,136 x 640), the 331ppi on the Nokia Lumia 920 (4.5-inch, 1,280 x 768) or even the 342ppi on the Sony Xperia acro S and the Xiaomi Phone 2 (4.3-inch, 1,280 x 720).

Assuming Chen's talking about a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, a quick calculation based on these two numbers would give us a 5-inch screen size. Taking into account that a reliable source of ours got to see HTC's 5-inch 6435LVW phablet recently, this would make the Find 5 unofficially the second device to receive the same full HD panel. Still, there's a significant difference inside these two phones: Chen had previously mentioned that the Find 5 will be joining the quad-core APQ8064 party, while the HTC device appears to sport the dual-core, LTE-enabled MSM8960. Speaking of which, the same source informed us that much like the Flyer, HTC's 6435LVW will also feature N-trig stylus technology. Will Oppo follow in the same footsteps? And will it bring back the slide-out keyboard à la Find X903 (pictured above)? Go on, Mr. Chen, tell us more.

The Problem With Facebook Exchange - Business Insider

Facebook has been working on a big improvement to its display ads?those small "Marketplace" ads displayed on the righthand side of its desktop website.

It's called Facebook Exchange (FBX), and some of its partners are now reporting they've seen improvements in clickthrough rates and cost per acquisition.

That's great!

But FBX leaves out the most important ad products Facebook is working on?its social and mobile ads.

In a nutshell, Facebook Exchange, or FBX, lets advertisers use automated systems to bid for ads and place them in real time, using information about users gathered from their visits to other websites. Google and Yahoo have similar systems.

But it simply brings that common Web-advertising technique known as retargeting to Facebook ads, while leaving out most of the things that make Facebook special.

"There's no social element," says Rob Leathern, CEO of Optimal. He should know: Optimal participates in Facebook's Preferred Marketing Developers program, a group of ad-technology companies that help advertisers and agencies manage campaigns on Facebook.

Facebook has acknowledged that social ads perform better than nonsocial ads. But it's harder to develop a smart social campaign than it is to simply run ads that consist of images, text, and links.

We've talked to a bunch of startup entrepreneurs recently who are bullish on Facebook advertising. They've become avid students of Facebook ads because they need to figure out cheap ways to acquire users.

The secret, they say, is not to run simple links to your website, but to get users to like your Facebook page. Ads that promote likes are generally far more effective than ads which feature links?and ultimately cheaper, since you can keep marketing to your page's Facebook fans.

Some big advertisers are figuring this out, too. Leathern says that 70 percent of the ads his clients run are social in nature.

"If someone only does FBX retargeting ads, they're missing a large part of the story," Leathern says.

Here's what you can't do with FBX:

  • Sponsored Stories. These ads, which appear in users' news feeds, are the best way to use Facebook's word-of-mouth dynamics.
  • Open Graph Sponsored Stories. A twist on Sponsored Stories, these ads report a specific action, like listening to a song or reading a news article. Optimal says these ads perform three and a half times better than the Marketplace ads one can buy via FBX.
  • Mobile Sponsored Stories. This is the primary way to buy ads on Facebook's mobile apps?there's no equivalent to the ads sold on FBX.
  • Mobile App Installs. This program, which encourages users to install a specific app, can't be purchased via FBX.

The good thing about FBX: It's easier to run campaigns on both Facebook and other websites at the same time. And real-time bidding allows for the placement of time-sensitive campaigns.

But using FBX?at least for now, until Facebook is able to bring its social advertising products onto the platform somehow?means missing the best ways to advertise on Facebook.

Even Celebrities Need Legal Help with DUI Issues - Lawyersonsunset

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) ? Amanda Bynes came close to disaster Thursday night when she was driving around West Hollywoodon a suspended license and got into a minor accident.?Bynes, 26, was driving out of a parking lot on Sunset Boulevard when she tapped the bumper of a car in front of her, leaving little or no damage.?Bynes? reckless behavior of late has landed her in hot water. Radar Online reports that she?s been ordered to appear in court to explain her actions.?If she fails to show up, then a warrant would be issued for her arrest.

Her latest driving mishap comes after photos emerged showing the actress driving while smoking out of what appeared to be a marijuana pipe.?TMZ says the actress was first spotted at a Baja Fresh in the San Fernando Valley, where she smoked from the pipe in the parking lot and ate tacos.?She then went to a spa and hours later ended up in a Home Depot parking lot where she smoked some more, TMZ says.

Bynes is driving illegally because the DMV suspended her license on August 25th.?DMV officials would not give the specific reason for the suspension, but it could be because she refused to take a sobriety test when she was pulled over for DUI in April.?In California, such refusal results in automatic license suspension.?Bynes was stopped for driving with her lights off on Sunday, Sept. 9, but officers never asked her for her driver?s license.?LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman said the officers weren?t required to do so, but other law enforcement sources told KTLA that officers routinely check license and insurance whenever someone is pulled over.

Bynes is facing a drunk driving charge after hitting a Los Angeles County sheriff?s cruiser April 6 in West Hollywood.?The 26-year-old was arrested around 3 a.m. after authorities said her black BMW hit the rear corner of the sheriff?s vehicle.?She was charged with driving under the influence after she refused a Breathalyzer or blood-alcohol test.

Bynes pleaded not guilty to the charges through her attorney, and took to Twitter to deny the allegations.??I can?t help but laugh at all of you writing fake stories about me,? she tweeted May 27. ?I was not in any hit and runs. I don?t drink so the DUI is false.??Bynes is also facing two hit-and-run charges stemming from separate incidents on April 10 and Aug. 4.In the August incident, a motorist said a vehicle driven by Bynes rear-ended and damaged her Toyota on Ventura Boulevard, LAPD sources said.?The driver said Bynes stopped only briefly, declared there was no damage and drove off.?The woman told investigators that Bynes failed to provide insurance information or allow police to be called before she left.?Bynes told investigators she and the woman mutually agreed there was no significant damage after the low-speed collision, police said.?Investigators determined that the Toyota had about $800 in damage, and that Bynes didn?t notify police or exchange insurance information as required by law.

Following her initial DUI charge, Bynes took her case straight to the top, sending a message to President Obama on Twitter.??Hey @BarackObama ? I don?t drink,? she wrote. ?Please fire the cop who arrested me. I also don?t hit and run. The end.?

Obama condemns attack that killed envoy, 3 others

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama vowed Wednesday the United States would "work with the Libyan government to bring to justice" those who killed U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in an attack on the consulate in Benghazi.

"Make no mistake. Justice will be done," he said in a Rose Garden appearance at the White House.

Obama, who ordered an increase in security at U.S. facilities overseas, said he "condemns in the strongest possible terms the outrageous and shocking" attack.

He spoke after Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney condemned the attack, and criticized the administration for its initial response to a separate incident on Tuesday, the breach of the U.S. embassy in Cairo.

The president spoke with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at his side as the deaths in Libya quickly roiled the U.S. political campaign, now in its final seven weeks.

Stevens, 52, and three other Americans were killed when he and a group of embassy employees went to the consulate to try to evacuate staff as the building came under attack by a mob armed with guns and rocket propelled grenades.

The incidents in Benghazi and Cairo were reportedly the work of protesters angry over a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

In his remarks, Obama said: "We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, but there is absolutely no justification for this type of senseless violence, none."

Romney's criticism appeared limited to an initial statement issued the previous day by the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. He said it was "akin to an apology," and that said as president, Obama bears responsibility for it. "They clearly sent mixed messages for the world," he said of the administration.

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo issued a warning to all Americans in Cairo early Tuesday morning that it expected there would be demonstrations in the general neighborhood of the embassy. When it became clear later in the day that there would be a demonstration outside the embassy, it issued the statement referenced by Romney.

That statement said that the embassy "condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims ? as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions." The statement was issued before protesters breached the embassy.

Stevens is the first U.S. ambassador to be killed in an attack since 1979, when Ambassador Adolph Dubs was killed in Afghanistan. The State Department identified one of the other Americans killed Tuesday as Sean Smith, a foreign service information management officer. The identities of the others were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The White House said Obama was informed Tuesday night that Stevens was not accounted for and was notified Wednesday morning that he had been killed.

In a written statement earlier Wednesday, Obama called Stevens a "courageous and exemplary representative of the United States."

The four Americans, he said, "exemplified America's commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe."

U.S. officials said some 50 Marines were being sent to Libya to reinforce security at U.S. diplomatic facilities in the aftermath of the attack.

The Marines are members of an elite group known as a Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team, whose role is to respond on short notice to terrorism threats and to reinforce security at U.S. embassies. They operate worldwide.

The officials who disclosed the plan to send the Marines spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Following his Rose Garden remarks, Obama went to the State Department to visit employees and offer support. The White House said Obama wanted to express solidarity with U.S. diplomats and thank them for their service.

Meanwhile, the U.N. Security Council has a long-scheduled meeting Wednesday morning to discuss Libya and diplomats said the United States is seeking a council statement on the attack. U.N. Undersecretary-General Jeffrey Feltman, a former American diplomat and close friend of Stevens', is scheduled to brief the council on Libya.

Stevens was a career diplomat who spoke Arabic and French and had already served two tours in Libya, including running the office in Benghazi during the revolt against Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. He was confirmed as ambassador to Libya by the Senate earlier this year.

His State Department biography, posted on the website of the U.S. Embassy to Libya, says he "considers himself fortunate to participate in this incredible period of change and hope for Libya."

Clinton said Stevens had a "passion for service, for diplomacy and for the Libyan people."

He "risked his own life to lend the Libyan people a helping hand to build the foundation for a new, free nation. He spent every day since helping to finish the work that he started," she said.

Stevens joined the Foreign Service in 1991 and spent his early State Department career at posts in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria and Israel. After working for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff for Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., Stevens was posted to Libya as deputy chief of mission.

In that post, Stevens wrote several confidential cables back to Washington, describing Gadhafi's bizarre behavior. During the 2011 revolt against Gadhafi, he was one of the last American diplomats to stay in Tripoli and after the embassy was closed, he was appointed to head the U.S. liaison office to the Transitional National Council.

iOS 6 coming soon, here's what's new

15 hrs.

We first heard about iOS 6?during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, but on Thursday,?Apple's senior vice president of iOS Software Scott Forstall finally shared more details about the latest version of the company's mobile operating system ??and revealed that?we're getting it on Sept. 19.

The new iPhone 5 will ship on Sept. 21 with iOS 6 preloaded, but folks who own an iPhone 3GS, an?iPhone 4, an iPhone 4S, a?fourth-generation iPod Touch, an?iPad 2 or a?third-generation iPad will be able to download the software update for free on Sept. 19.

As we've learned during WWDC, iOS 6 will bring over 200 new features to customers. "We think you?re going to love it," Forstall says.

Siri
Siri's gotten a lot?smarter in iOS 6. She's learned a lot of new languages (Italian, Mandarin,?Cantonese, and more) and become friends with a lot of new services (such as OpenTable, Yelp, Rotten Tomatoes, and others).

The personal assistant can now offer significantly more information when asked about sports, restaurants, movies and more. You can?make restaurant reservations or get movie reviews. Thanks to better support for Twitter,?you can also ask Siri to tweet for you.

It is now also finally possible to launch apps using Siri. Just tell her you want to "play Angry Birds" and see what happens.?

Facebook
The folks at?Apple integrated Facebook into iOS 6 in the same way they integrated Twitter into the last major version of iOS.?There's now a neat "tap to post" option in the Notification Center ?(and there's a "tap to tweet" button as well, of course).

Facebook is deeply integrated into the Calendar app?as well, meaning that Facebook events (and birthdays listed on Facebook) will appear on your device's calendar.

Reply with message or remind me later
If you find yourself in a situation where you're unable to take a call, you can now instruct your iPhone to send a pre-set message to the caller or to remind you to call the person back. This is incredibly handy if you're in a rush and not in the mood to pick up a call just to say "I'm busy. I'll call you back."

Do not disturb
A "do not disturb" feature was added in iOS 6. It means that you can tell your phone that it should silence alerts or incoming calls for a while, so that you can sleep in peace or enjoy a quiet, interruption-free evening with someone special.

This do not disturb feature allows for a lot of fine-tuning, meaning that you can make sure that people in your "favorites" list or contacts will always ring through or that your phone should ring if someone calls twice within three minutes.

FaceTime
FaceTime now works over 3G, not just over Wi-Fi. And you don't have to worry about whether you're selecting someone's phone number or Apple ID when placing a FaceTime call?? because the two are?now united.

Photo?Stream
You can now easily share your Photo Streams with friends or family. All you have to do is choose a photo and an album to share ? your pals will receive a notification and the photos will appear in an album where they can comment.

Mail
The Mail app got some nice new tweaks. The VIPs feature will allow you to mark individuals as important, so that their emails will be starred and appear in a "flagged" mailbox. You can adjust alert settings for VIPs separately as well.

Oh, and it's now even simpler to add photos or videos into emails and?the inbox can be refreshed with a pull. Not bad!

Passbook
A?new app called Passbook allows you to collect and store boarding passes, discount cards, movie tickets, and all the things you'd normally have to print out and scan once you arrive at a business.?

Thanks to location support, the app will even pull up the relevant card once you are near the place where you'd use it. (This means that if you're near a Starbucks, Passbook would pull up your Starbucks card automatically, if you're at an airport, Passbook would pull up your boarding pass automatically, and so on.)?

As a bonus, the?cards in Passbook are live-updating, meaning that your boarding pass will always have the latest boarding information.

Guided access
Apple's adding something called guided access to iOS 6. This tool?will allow you to disable certain controls in order to make your device a bit more kid-friendly.

Maps
As confirmed in June, Apple's ditching Google Maps in iOS 6. It will use its own mapping solution now. There's Yelp integration, traffic information (with real-time crowd-sourced data), automatically re-adjusting routes, and the ability for Siri to answer the age-old "are we there yet?"

Apple's also adding something called "Flyover" to Maps. This feature makes the whole world look a bit like a Sim City game by showing 3-D models of geographical features and buildings.

The best part though, is the fact that there are now turn-by-turn directions in Maps. Siri is?now able to guide you to and from places. Downside is that there appear to be no public transportation directions in iOS 6, based on rumors.

Lost mode
The Find My iPhone feature now includes something called "lost mode." This mode will allow you to send a phone number to a missing device in order to allow whoever found it to call you. (This is, of course, assuming that someone is interested in tracking you down and returning your beloved iDevice.)

Safari
Safari now has iCloud tabs?? which allow for browsing sessions to be synced across your devices?? as well as an offline reading list. You'll now also be able to upload photos right from Safari to your favorite websites. Talk about time saving!

What else?
It's tough to cover all 200 of the new features found in iOS 6, but let's just say that there are plenty more little tweaks and gems to be found in the new mobile operating system. We'll give you a more thorough rundown soon.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Russia's Vladimir Putin admits wildlife stunts are staged

SOCHI, Russia (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has admitted that some of his most famous media adventures with wildlife have been carefully staged but has said they were worthwhile because they drew the public's attention to important conservation projects.

His macho appearances with everything from tigers to whales have been a staple of Russian state TV for years, cementing his image as a man of action but drawing mockery from critics who have likened them to Soviet-style propaganda.

Although Putin's spokesman has previously revealed that at least one of the stunts was a set-up, Putin until now has appeared to play along with the exercises, allowing state media to present them as they seem rather than how they really are.

But in a rare meeting with a Kremlin critic after his latest wildlife stunt - taking to the skies in a light aircraft with a group of cranes last week - Putin admitted he had often taken part in media exercises which were carefully staged.

Sometimes, he said the stunts had been over the top.

"Of course, there are excesses. And I am enraged about it," he told Masha Gessen, a journalist and Putin critic whom he had invited for a meeting in the Kremlin after she was sacked from her job editing a travel magazine for refusing to send reporters to cover the crane flight.

She wrote an account of her meeting with the president in Bolshoi Gorod magazine.

"But I thought up these tigers myself. Twenty other countries where tigers live, also started taking care of them," she quoted him as saying, referring to an incident four years ago when he was shown shooting a tiger with a tranquilizer gun that looked like it was poised to attack someone.

Environmentalists later suggested the tiger had been driven in from a zoo for Putin to shoot for the TV cameras.

"The leopards were also my idea," Putin was quoted as saying. "Yes, I know, they were caught before but the most important thing is to draw public attention to the problem."

He was apparently referring to an episode in 2011 when he was shown tagging and releasing a rare and injured snow leopard. Environmentalists again said it had been brought in specially.

"OF COURSE IT WAS A SET UP"

"Everything I do in this area (wildlife conservation) should have nothing to do with politics. But for a man in my position it is very difficult," Putin said.

Putin also admitted that a stunt last year for which he donned a wet suit and dove to the bottom of the Black Sea to apparently discover ancient amphorae was also not what it seemed.

"Why did I dive? Not to show my gills off but to make sure people learn history. Of course it was a set up," the journalist quoted Putin as saying.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, where Putin is spending a few days this week, that Gessen had provided "a correct account of the meeting except for some insignificant details."

Putin's summons to Gessen appeared to be an attempt to mediate in her dispute with her former employer.

She said that Putin, flanked by the magazine's owner, asked her whether she really wanted to have her job back or whether she was comfortable with the role of "a persecuted journalist" in which case the conversation did not make sense.

Gessen wrote that she had refused to accept Putin's offer to take her old job back, saying she did not want to work in a magazine where an editor-in-chief is appointed by Putin. However, Peskov said that Gessen had initially agreed to take her old job back only to change her mind the following day.

Mars rock hound: Rover Curiosity prepares to head for unique formation

The Mars rover Curiosity is about to head for?Glenelg, a unique confluence of rock formations. It's only a quarter-mile away, but the trip could take weeks as the chemistry lab on wheels examines the terrain.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has provided a sweeping panorama of its new home in Gale Crater, provided what one researcher calls a dog's-eye view of the rover's underside, and now aims to raise its eyes to the sky to capture the transit of the Martian moon Phobos as it swings across the sun.

All in 37 sols' work for the Mini Cooper-sized chemistry lab on wheels whose mission is to help scientists determine if this patch of the red planet has ever had an environment hospitable to life. (A sol is one day on Mars ? 40 minutes longer than on earth.)

So far, the rover has undergone one hardware test after another to ensure all of the instruments are working and the rover's seven-foot long robotic arm works as advertised. That phase comes to an end Friday evening Earth time, when the rover finally strikes out for Glenelg, a unique confluence of rock formations a quarter of a mile away, according to Jennifer Trosper, Curiosity's mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

RELATED:?Are you scientifically literate? Take our quiz!

If Curiosity was to make the trip without rock stops along the way it would reach Glenelg in less than two weeks.?But now that engineers are about to share the keys to the rover with the science team, researchers are eager to put tools on the science turret at the end of Curiosity's arm to use along the way.

The first object researchers are hunting for is a hefty chunk of basalt, rock born of volcanic activity and widespread on Mars. The goal is to use ChemCam, a laser-based device for imaging rocks and gathering data on its composition, and an alpha-particle x-ray spectrometer, in tandem to analyze the rock. ChemCam sits atop Curiosity's mast. In addition, the turret's stand-in for a geologist's hand lens also will be brought to bear on the rock.

Once the rover's testing phase ends Thursday, "we will drive until the science team finds that rock," Ms. Trosper says. After a few weeks at the rock, "we will continue to drive to another location, hopefully a sandy location, where we can begin to scoop."

The pause time there could run another few weeks each, she suggests.

The overall verdict on Curiosity's performance to date? "So far, outstanding," Trosper says.

One measure of the progress made in operating rovers on Mars ? from Sojourner Truth in the late 1990s to Spirit and Opportunity, and now to Curiosity ? is the amount of time consumed by days where the teams didn't meet their objectives. With Sojourner Truth, the first rover to land on Mars, one day out of three was lost to glitches of one kind or another, she says. With the long-lived rovers Spirit and Opportunity, the number fell to one day out of 10. With Curiosity, so far it's one day out of 36.

That may bode well for future rover missions. Aside from the science it performs, Curiosity also is designed to serve as a platform for future long-distance rover missions, where only the instruments change to meet a new mission's science objectives. NASA Mars program officials have said that while it's possible to envision missions that would require a rover smaller than Curiosity, they don't foresee a need for a rover larger than Curiosity.

Perhaps its the monotony of a simple exercise in bed that allows this to help. For more strange ways to fall asleep, check out her info-comic on Wonder How-to.

Top 5 Reasons MLMs & Network Marketing Get A ... - Work At Home

Why MLMs & Networking Marketing Suck!

I don't know about you but I haven't had the best experiences with MLMs and Network Marketing Opportunities. Now let me make it clear, I'm not a HATER! Don't let the title fool you.?In my opinion there are way too many people that bash MLMs, Network Marketing, Affiliate Marketing and some home based business just because they couldn't make money with it. I don't sip on that "Hator-Aid". I think that's some old simple Simon stuff when people do that. It distorts reality and makes it hard to determine what's legit when you have people whining online because of their own shortcomings or because they can.

So to be clear I'm not one of those folks! ?But as someone that has dabbled and researched some MLM and Network Marketing opportunities I've noticed a few legitimate gripes against this industry. So let's explore and discuss them together later in this article. My hope is to actually discover legitimate companies that address these gripes in the proper way. Because honestly I would love to find a great home business that I could promote without feeling dirty or brainwashed.?

Before we do that, we need to define Multilevel Marketing (MLM) aka Network Marketing.?In a nutshell it's when you earn a commission for selling a product and you also earn a commission when someone you recruit into a company sells products as well. You can probably lump most home based business opportunities into this definition as well. ?

Hopefully that helps you understand what we're talking about. Okay, let's get into the reasons folks think MLMs suck. ?

?

1. The Reps, Agents, Brokers, etc.

I've come up with some rep types. It's not a complete list but it's probably covers a lot of reps you may have run into or you're guilty of being (Sorry in advance.).

- Fart Reps:

They come on really strong at the beginning, it's almost obnoxious. They answer all your emails or phone calls. But then once you're signed up and they have earned their commission, they slowly vanish into the air just leaving remnants?of their presence.?

- Stevie Wonder Reps.

Have you ever seen a horse that has blinders on. It literally covers their peripheral?vision. They can only see in front of them and where the rider leads them. Well there are some reps that are just like this. They'll only paint a sweet picture of their company. They won't tell you any of the bad stuff as if good companies don't have any cons or annoying things. They literally want to keep you blind so you don't actually do your research.?

- Squirrel Reps

These guys are literally nutty about their company. They scurry around the web or offline telling everyone how great their company is. But if you dare pose questions about certain practices, the product or legitimacy of their company, they go nuts on you! They might chatter off at the mouth with profanity, name calling and attack your work ethic or intelligence. I've run into quite a few people like this when I've written reviews on Ameriplan & ZeekRewards.?

- Sarah Palin Reps

These reps go rogue?and pretty much play by their own rules. They don't stick to the script or policies. They may engage in activities or practices that aren't sanctioned by their parent company to recruit other reps or to make sales. These reps ?are far more dangerous than "Stevie Wonder" reps because they'll flat out lie to you rather than keep certain information from your view. ?These types of reps can actually cause a parent company to go down or be fined.?

- Similac Reps

These reps breath smell of Similac and they're wet behind the ears. They are the baby reps. They're new to the company and they're trying to recruit anyone and everyone under them. The problem is they haven't been successful on their own and they're depending on recruiting you to make their first commission. Or in my case, they want me to join under them because they know thousands of people trust my judgement and will usually join what I recommend. Either way, these reps have it wrong. They don't understand that folks are less likely to join under someone that hasn't had some success. It's totally psychological. Folks feel they can succeed if they can see someone like them succeed too. But as a similac?rep you're at a disadvantage. It sucks because how can you prove your success if you can't get anyone to sign under you. But that goes along with some of the other reasons I'll cover later.?

So that's my list of rep types. It's no wonder why people are left jaded and then bad mouth MLMs. Is it fair? Not really, but you can see how it happens. I hate to admit it, but I've probably ignored legitimate companies because I've encountered one of these rep personas here on my blog or out on the web. Sadly, I'm probably not alone. I imagine many other people are probably unfairly assessing companies in the same way. Hopefully this article will stop this trend and we can discover the real reps which brings me to another rep type.?

?

- "100%" Reps

There is a little urban saying that goes "Keeping it 100!". For those of you that are "hood challenged" it means just being 100% real or honest. These reps that don't pull any punches. They just tell you how it is. They know that you'll find out the good and bad anyway. So they'd rather you know it up front so you don't waste their time or yours. Reps that keep it 100 will tell you the pros and cons about a given company. They'll let you know some of the stumbling blocks that the other reps try to hide. But any rep that is 100%, will try to help you around them.?Either way, they give you a choice to make an informed decision that isn't biased towards just making them a commission. If you've read my body of work for a while, you know that's what I try to do with anything I personally promote or research. Sometimes folks appreciate it and there are times where folks don't.?Unfortunately the 100% rep is a rare breed to find. But they do exist. It just takes some digging to hunt them down. Hopefully a few will chime in at the end of the article. ;)

?

2. The Products

We spent a lot of time on the reps but with any company the product will really make or break the company. Unfortunately with many MLM businesses, the products are either questionable, overpriced or have limited appeal. This can make selling them very difficult which means you're less likely to succeed. No disrespect, but I think many of the health and wellness businesses fall into this category. Have you ever tried justifying?to your family or friends that they should pay significantly more for a cleaning product because it's "green" or "safer"? Most will look at you sideways and prefer to go to their local supermarket and get a cheaper alternative (even though it may be an inferior product). If you pick a company that promotes a product or service that you wouldn't use or can't see anyone else you know using, then it's probably something that you're not going to be able to succeed with. Folks that tend to do well really believe and actually use the product or service they're promoting. So they can speak from true experiences and not a script which most people can see through. I know from my own experience I've converted way more people to the companies I promote when I show and prove that I have worked with the company and succeeded. So when you're choosing a business, you need to focus on the product line as well as the commission structure (if you can understand it. More on that later.). If you just pick a company because they pay the highest commission or the Rep tells you that they're making tons of money, you're more likely to give up and fail if you can't reproduce the same results.

?

3. The Compensation Plans, Matrix or whatever the hell you call them?.

This is probably the biggest issue for me when looking into MLMs and Network Marketing opportunities. I'll be the first to admit, I suck at math. When I see numbers it gives me the "willies" and a cold sweat. So with that in mind, there may be some bias in my next observation. I've noticed that many MLMs make their compensation plans difficult to understand. Sometimes there are overrides, matrices, levels, legs, arms and whatever other body part they come up with to describe it. I know the argument for them is that it provides a rep various ways to earn more money. That may be the case. But it may also turn people like me away from them because I don't have a PhD in Hieroglyphics to understand how much damn money I actually earn with your company. I ?don't necessarily want to watch a long ass presentation or speak to a cult member? I mean a rep to figure out the compensation plan. Ultimately it shouldn't take an SAT score of 1600 to decipher your compensation plan. All I want to know is that If I sell x amount of product I earn x percentage of that sale! The same simple explanation should should apply to whoever I recruit into the company that makes sales. This nonsense about filling in the legs or levels to earn 1/2 a point, blah, blah is just confusing for the sake of it. Again this may just be MY pet peeve because I'm a simpleton but I suspect there are others that feel the same way.?

?

4. The Start Up Fees.?

There is this lie being fed online and offline that any type of work at home opportunity that requires a fee is a scam. So many legitimate MLMs and Network Marketing opportunities are unjustly categorized this way because of the advice of people who are too lazy to point out the distinctions between a business and a job. In most cases with a job you shouldn't pay a fee directly to work for a company (and even that is flawed because many of us pay indirectly for a job). With a business there are start up fees needed to get your business off the ground which could be inventory, a store front, website, employees, advertising, etc. So obviously money is needed to start a business and thus doesn't mean it's a scam. Now with that said there are some business opportunities that aren't legitimate. So you need to research them like you do any other opportunity. But the mere fact that you need to invest money doesn't make it a scam. The fact that you may not make your money back doesn't make an MLM a scam either. It just means you couldn't cut it or had poor support and training. Now even if you do understand there are fees required for a business, depending on how expensive they are it may be a deal breaker. Some programs expect you to buy a certain amount of product per month to stay a Rep. That's all cool and dandy if you do use those products and services regularly (i.e. Internet, Cell, Phone, Certain Grocercies). But if not, then you may end up with a lot of unwanted product cluttering your home. Then there are companies that don't have this requirement but expect you to cough up a high start up fee and then a monthly fee thereafter for the privilege of selling their products. This can become very excessive depending on the company. It's hard to swallow these type of fees if you're not making any money. Again, it doesn't necessarily make a company a scam. But it's something that may turn folks' way especially if they're tight for money.?

?

5. The Long Ass Meetings or Presentations.?

I don't know how many times I've been asked to go watch a presentation online or come to an offline meeting to learn more about a given opportunity. Look, I've been in this game long enough to know that there is going to be a hard sales pitch or some Jeidi mind trick to get me to join. I don't like being pressured or hypnotized into anything. All I need is the basics. How much will I make (in plain English), what's the product and service, and how long has the company been in business? All the other information about how the owners are multi billionaires, and that your company farts smells like perfume makes no difference to me. Maybe the other information is important but let me dig through that on my own time and pace. Your initial job is to give the most important information first (Who, What, How and When?). ?And no, because I don't want to endure your presentation it doesn't mean I'm not a serious business owner or prospect. It's just my time is precious and I like having control over it without feeling like your next commission or meal ticket. There are also some companies that require a regular meeting with other reps. I can see the benefits of this if it's to help motivate you or provide you with additional information to help you make more sales. You learn faster from other successful people. But if the meeting is about making me feel like crap for not succeeding or trying to convince me to upgrade to some magical system to make more sales, then it's just a bad use of my time.?

?

Now it's your turn..

So what do you think? Do you agree with these observations? Would you add some others or change them? Let me know your thoughts below.?Again there are some great companies out there.

As I said at the start of this article I'm not an MLM or Network Marketing Hater or trying to call you or your company out. So don't get your panties in a bunch if anything I covered above happens to pertain to you or your parent company! ?I think if you find the right company that you truly believe in and the products are useful, you can make some great money! But unfortunately some of the reasons above may prevent people from exploring these great opportunities. The goal of this article is to help people make more informed decisions about the MLM & Network Marketing opportunities they explore.?

My other hope is to discover companies that have addressed these gripes. I know enough about this industry to make me dangerous but I don't know everything or all the great opportunities out there. ?So I'm always looking for additional sources of income and so are my loyal subscribers. If you feel confident that your company addresses all these points and willing to prove it, then chime in with some detailed information below. Don't just be lazy and say hey just visit my website, call me or email me. Keep it 100% and open right on this blog post so others can benefit. I'm sure if you do, then folks will definitely want to contact you. But your responses will probably be measured by some of the reasons we've covered in this article. ;)

Either way I'm looking forward to hearing your experiences with MLMs, Network Marketing and other home based businesses.?

Continuing management needed for most threatened and endangered species, experts say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? The Endangered Species Act (ESA) -- the key US law protecting species listed as threatened or endangered -- focuses on boosting species' numbers until they reach recovery thresholds and so can be taken off the ESA list. Almost 1400 species are now listed. Yet as many as 84 percent of currently listed species with management plans will face threats to their biological recovery even after they are considered "recovered" under the act, according to an article by Dale D. Goble and his colleagues in the October issue of BioScience. These species will require continuing management actions. Goble and colleagues argue that individual, formal conservation agreements are the best way to help such "conservation-reliant species."

The ESA was intended to interact with state and local regulations to prevent extinction. However, say Goble and his coauthors, these regulations are often insufficient to maintain a species' population, and the ESA itself may hinder the spread of a species -- for example, a landowner may not wish to create habitat for a species that will then require monitoring under the ESA. Individual conservation agreements might not only help species' biological recovery and accelerate their removal from the ESA list, Goble and his colleagues maintain -- they might prevent some species from having to be listed in the first place. To be effective, such agreements should be tailored to the species, landscape, landowners, conservation managers, and sources of funding of each situation.

Recognizing that conservation reliance is a deeper and more widespread problem for ESA-listed species than initially thought, Goble and his colleagues distinguish two forms of conservation reliance -- population-management reliance and the less direct, threat-management reliance. The former will involve interventions aimed at helping specific populations. The latter is suitable for species that can persist if threats are managed so that an appropriate habitat is maintained.

Both sorts are illustrated in articles in the October BioScience. Goble's article is part of a special section that includes three case studies of specific conservation-reliant species. Carol I. Bocetti and her colleagues discuss conservation management agreements that will ensure continued availability of habitat for Kirtland's warbler. J. Michael Reed and his coauthors assess the status of Hawaii's endangered birds and how continued management is needed to maintain the populations of these species. Finally, the plight of the Mojave desert tortoise and its continuing management needs are addressed by Roy C. Averill-Murray and his colleagues.

Field trips ? UALR International Business Trip to Erfurt, Germany

I apologize for the lack of posts in the last week. Our time here as been crazy and packed with activities and other adventures.

Last week continued with more lectures, guest speakers, and field trips. On Friday night, we had our mid-term ceremony (more on that in a following post).

Last Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 29), we all went outside to the university?s courtyard for several organizational behavior-related activities. In one, we were divided into the groups we were going to be in to create our business plans. But instead of working on a business plan, we were each given four or five pieces of paper, each with a clue. We were all to share our clues with each other ? by telling, not showing each other our slips of paper ? so we could put the clues together and solve a problem. The ultimate goal of the exercise was not the math (which was a good thing for most of the groups) but to see how we all work together and communicate within our groups.

In another exercise, we were all given slips of paper, but this time with the name of an animal. We were told to close our eyes, make the noise of our given animal, and find the others making the same noise. My animal was a bird. I?ll admit, I had to open my eyes part of the time ? I didn?t want to run into something or fall over. I finally found my group despite the the differences in our calls; I was saying ?tweet tweet? (perhaps indicative of too much time on Twitter?) while the others went ?chirp chirp.? (Another bunch of students had the challenge of determining what sound a fish makes.)

On Thursday (Aug. 30) we visited Erfurter Sportbetriebe ? a multi-use sports arena which included a large ice skating rink, a speed (ice) skating track, an indoor arena, and an outdoor arena. An Olympic medalist even made an appearance. Daniela Anschultz-Thoms, 2006 Olympic speed skating champion was kind enough to join us at the arena.

On Friday (Aug. 31), we traveled about an hour to a golf resort in Blankenhain. It was gorgeous out there. We were all even given brief golf lessons ? a try at the driving range and then putting. I?ve been to a driving range once and have played miniature golf many times, but this was my first trip to an actual golf course. And surprisingly, I wasn?t bad! (Well, when my club actually came into contact with the ball.)

By Kaiser GH Update

PlusNews examines the recently approved grants under the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria?s Transitional Funding Mechanism (TFM), stating, ?Last week, the Fund announced that 45 new grant applications, from countries such as Burundi, Malawi and Swaziland, have been approved under the TFM.? The news service notes, ?Almost 25 percent of this combined total will go towards [tuberculosis (TB)], which represents a significant increase from the average 16 percent of funds allocated for TB since the Global Fund was created in 2002, according to a StopTB Partnership statement released in response? to the fund?s announcement. PlusNews notes, ?Unlike regular grants, which can run for up to five years, those awarded under the TFM will be limited to two years, by which time the fund is expected to have launched its new funding model? Anticipating Consequences ? Speaking of Security ? The RSA Blog ...

I was at the RSA Conference in Chengdu, China last week, giving a couple of sessions on ?Keys and Clouds? and ?The Pillar of Trust: where Big Data meets Security?, the latter jointly with my colleague and fellow blogger Branden Williams. I?ll be writing (and speaking) more about both these topics, but there was another subject that struck me particularly strongly over the course of the conference: the complex dynamics of the systems in which our security products and strategies must operate and the difficulty of anticipating both the positive and negative consequences of those products and strategies.

The first impetus to these thoughts occurred shortly after I arrived at the hotel in Chengdu.

I?m giving a presentation in Norway in October and thought I?d take a look at what flights might be available from Z?rich. So I fired up a browser. Instead of my usual Google search home page, I got a ?site not available? message. ?OK,? I thought. ?Google and China? I know what that?s about.? So I went to the bookmarked travel site that I typically use. But instead of the usual site, I was redirected to the China version of the site ? which provided information only about flights in China.

Annoying, but not a big deal. Still, it struck me that this was a classic instance of a simple system trying to regulate a complex system, one of the best ways of understanding unintended, unwanted and unanticipated consequences (see this blog by Alex Tabarrok). After all, my immediate response was to think about ways to get around the restrictions, to break out of the system of imposed controls so that I could get free access into the larger system of the internet. It also reinforced the strategies I had put in place to deal with problems like this, starting with bringing a special stripped-down laptop on the trip rather than my usual work computer.

The next morning, after the keynotes, I attended Tatu Yl?nen?s session on SSH. Tatu invented the SSH protocol and is the founder and CEO of SSH Communications Security.? Towards the end of the session, as Tatu was discussing the advances that his company is making in management of SSH keys, he remarked that the success of SSH as a protocol and product has resulted in often thousands of SSH keys in an enterprise, creating the significant issues in management of large volumes of keys that Tatu is working to address. Once again, I was struck by the system-level issues that Tatu was confronting. In this case, the extremely effective run-time capabilities of the SSH protocol have to be integrated within a larger system of deployment and key rotation, particularly because of the attacker/defender dynamics within which the protocol operates.

Branden, Jason Rader and I decided to visit the Panda Research Center while we were in Chengdu. So early Wednesday morning we took a taxi to the center, getting there soon after it opened. It?s a wonderful park with impressive bamboo forests, beautiful lakes, striking views across the valley and a rope bridge that aspires to be a trampoline. It was definitely fun to see the pandas, but I was also struck by the statement on one of the signs that the red pandas were not always accessible to visitors because of ?inbreeding depression?.? Not that the pandas needed more serotonin , but that the population was generally of reduced fitness and needed to be protected. The Panda Research Center provides effective security for the pandas in the face of loss of habitat, but the isolation and limitation that protect the panda population also have clearly unwanted and unintended ? though not necessarily unanticipated ? ?consequences.

As I wrote in an earlier blog: ?looking at security from a system perspective has the benefit of encouraging a more intentional mind-set regarding what the system as a whole is intended to accomplish.? Our goal as security professionals should be to define, design and implement this larger system, not just point products and tactical responses to threats. Art Coviello, RSA Executive Chairman and EMC Executive VP, stated this even more emphatically in his keynote at RSA Conference China: ?We want to nurture an ecosystem of trust in the digital world.?? A systems perspective also helps in thinking about the consequences of our security strategies, products and processes. We need to understand the dynamics of security, bringing to bear the full range of tools that can help us understand those dynamics. ?Only with that understanding can we anticipate, understand and address consequences that can otherwise undermine the security technologies, processes and organizational structures that we put in place.

Home is yours, so the dreams are yours | Home Improvement

Home improvement projects involve many contractors that help people to build and renovate their home into their dream house.
